Our Drone as a First Responder can assist in all types of emergency calls. Take a look at Air1 assisting Yonkers Firefighters Local 628 and YPD Patrol Officers from the 3rd Precinct on a report of a car fire this weekend!!
As Air1 quickly got overhead and confirmed the car fire, this live stream was able to be viewed by responding Officers and Firefighters. Allowing those responding to see the scene of the emergency BEFORE they arrive is crucial in making sure the appropriate and necessary resources are being dispatched and utilized without delay.
After YFD quickly extinguished the flames, Air1 stayed overhead for a bit as our pilots activated thermal imaging- an incredibly useful piece of technology that can help firefighters locate hot spots in recently extinguished fires to prevent potential flare-ups.

Yonkers, NY- The Yonkers Police Department announced today the launch of the City of Yonkers’ Drone as a First Responder (DFR) pilot program, in partnership with Motorola Solutions Inc., Flying Lion Inc., Westchester Drone Ops, and St. Joseph’s Medical Center.
Drone as a First Responder (DFR) is an innovative and transformative use of Unmanned Aircraft Systems (aka Drones) used by public safety professionals to assist in everyday operations. This technology has not been implemented in the Westchester area as a DFR program until now. The Yonkers Police Department has committed to a 60-day pilot program to assess the use of this technology as an enhancement to our public safety operations.
For this pilot program, the Yonkers Police Department will utilize one drone- a DJI M300 series - equipped with high-definition cameras and thermal imaging. This drone will be responding to calls for service alongside, and overhead, Officers on the street. When a priority call for service is received, the drone will launch from the roof of St. Joseph’s Medical Center and be jointly operated by a pilot on the roof with the drone, as well as a pilot controlling it remotely from our AWARE Crime Control Center. From this launch location, this drone has a response area that reaches approximately 60% of all Police calls for service.
The real-time video feed will be streamed to Officers and Supervisors in the field via a smartphone and laptop application, so responders can see the emergency scene before arriving. The ability to evaluate the resources needed, prepare the proper operational response, and increase the safety of the first responders and the public is the intent of the project and the mission of this program.
Public transparency is a fundamental value of the Yonkers Police Department. To maintain the highest level of trust and transparency with the community, drone flight logs will be published on the Yonkers Police Department website to show the community how the dro

Guess who's back...
We're starting summer with a few less mopeds this year. One afternoon last week, we went out with one main goal- to make the streets a safer place.
The reckless operation of unregistered and uninsured mopeds, scooters, and dirt bikes continues to be our top community complaint. While we are constantly on the lookout for these dangerous motorists, we like to send our task force out there every once in a while for an enforcement detail- which usually results in many people walking home.
During just a 4-hour "Half the Wheels, All the Laws" detail, our team of Officers and Detectives impounded nearly 50 mopeds and issued almost as many summonses. This averages out to about one moped impounded every five minutes.
Don't get us wrong- we actually encourage two-wheel transportation around our city, provided it is done within the parameters of the law. If you are a rider and have your paperwork in order along with a valid license, enjoy yourself.
However-- If you are using a moped, scooter, or dirtbike thinking it is a way to skirt the laws surrounding licensing, registration, and insurance- we'll see you soon.

Let’s check in with our midnight Officers in the 2nd Precinct who caught a man red-handed a few weeks ago rummaging through one of our residents’ cars in the early hours of the morning.
Raymondo SEPULVEDA of Brooklyn was found sitting in the driver’s seat of a pick-up truck in the area of Central Park Avenue and Midland Terrace just before 2:00 am on March 28; a vehicle which he admitted on body-cam was “not his.” Officers found that he stole several items from within that vehicle and placed him under arrest.
Mr. SEPULVEDA was charged with Unauthorized Use of a Vehicle 3rd Degree and Grand Larceny 4th Degree. He was released with an appearance ticket in accordance with bail requirements.
Raymondo has a history of nine arrests ranging from theft to robbery and has failed to appear in court four times in the past.
Plot twist- Mr. SEPULVEDA failed to appear in court on our charges. Therefore, he has an active warrant out of this jurisdiction. If anyone has any information on Mr. SEPULVEDA’s whereabouts, please contact the Yonkers Police Department’s Warrant Squad at 914-377-7253.

Yonkers Police Commissioner Sapienza helps arrest an emotionally unstable man in Getty Square . Officers along with the Police comissioner responded to reports of an unstable man knocking things down and causing problems when Officers attempted to speak to the male, that is when a fight began and officers were able to quickly de escalate the incident.

In the early evening hours of Wednesday, March 27, 2024, a retired member of the YPD saw something concerning- shoes, glasses, and a note left on the pier in the downtown waterfront area. He promptly called our dispatch as he was concerned someone may have attempted to harm themselves.
Officers in our AWARE Crime Control Center immediately reviewed several cameras and found that a female had jumped into the water in that area a short time before. Based on the location where she entered the water, Officers from our 3rd and 4th Precincts, along with our Emergency Service Unit, responded to that area in an attempt to locate her.
Officers were able to see the female trapped under the dock at that location. Our Emergency Service Unit wasted no time in developing a rescue plan, putting on their water rescue gear, and heading into the water to rescue the female. Emergency Service Unit Officers Park, Ascolillo, Thomas, and Fernandez managed safety lines to ensure that Officers Rotondo, Waldron, and Sgt Barca were safe as they entered the water to perform the rescue. The rescue was successful, as the female was brought to a nearby dock to be transferred to medical personnel for evaluation. She was in stable condition after being treated at an area hospital.
Once again, our Officers worked together to perform another great rescue. Our AWARE Crime Control Center quickly located the female, saving precious moments that would have been wasted in a large search of the Hudson River. Our Emergency Service Unit once again executed a technical rescue to perfection, saving the life of a member of our community.

Another amazing job by our Emergency Service Unit, aided by First Deputy Chief Monaco and the 4th Precinct, who rescued a woman in distress.
Just before 9:30AM on Wednesday, January 31, 2024, Yonkers Police units responded to the top level of a parking garage in the confines of the 4th Precinct for a woman who was attempting to harm herself. 4th Precinct units created a secure perimeter while Emergency Service Unit Officers responded to the roof to begin rescue operations.
ESU Police Officer Sandro Vazquez initiated contact with the woman, who was clearly in distress, establishing a rapport and pleading with her to come down from the ledge. While PO Vazquez was speaking to the woman, ESU Officers Michael Mirabella, Jason Philipps, Richard Fernandez, and Brendan Moore established a rope safety system and secured it to the structure of the building in a matter of minutes. This system was secured to Officers for safety in the event that an Officer fell or had to go over the ledge to attempt the rescue.
PO Vazquez was soon joined by Deputy Chief Monaco, who leads our Crisis Negotiation Team. After about five minutes of negotiation, Officers observed the female begin to lean backward over the edge, so they rushed in to prevent her from falling and bring her to safety. The female was transported to an area hospital for evaluation and referred to the Mobile Crisis Response Team.
We share this video for two main reasons:
1- We want to highlight the amazing job our Officers do every day to help the people of this community while showing the immense amount of compassion and care they had for this woman.
2- We want everyone in our community to know that we have amazing resources here in Yonkers to help and support you through the struggles of everyday life.
Don't choose a permanent solution to a temporary problem. Please dial 9-8-8 if you feel like you may want to harm yourself. We don't want anyone to feel that harming themselves is the only choice they have- the

During the intense storm earlier this week, the Yonkers Police Department and Westchester County Police Department received reports of a motorist trapped in her vehicle in rising floodwaters on the Bronx River Parkway. Both departments responded to assist, as the Yonkers Police Department Emergency Service Unit donned their water rescue suits and deployed our rescue boat. Officers were able to reach the motorist by breaking the driver’s window and extracting her through it, lifting her onto the rescue boat and bringing her to safety. Her vehicle was completely submerged underwater just 30 seconds after she was removed from the vehicle. Thankfully, the motorist was uninjured.
We are thankful to have and be able to deploy these specialized resources to help our residents. We do this all with the assistance of our neighboring Law Enforcement partners at the Westchester County Department of Public Safety, as well as the many departments that protect the Cities, Towns, and Villages that make up this County.
It’s no secret that we’ve been seeing increased flooding in our area in recent years. If you must drive during inclement weather, please be cautious of pooling water and roadways that are prone to flooding. Even just a few inches of standing water is enough to disable a small vehicle. If you see a flooded roadway, play it safe and turn around. The long way to your destination is always faster and easier than getting there in our boat. Any time you are trapped in flooded waters, call us- we’ll always be there to help.

Christmas may be over, but the spirit of the Grinch is still alive in some people, especially Francisco Jose EDER MATEO, 27, of the Bronx. EDER MATEO decided that he was going to steal some packages from the porch of one of our residents. Unfortunately for him, our 2nd Precinct Officers were ready for him.
Despite his camouflaged jacket, Officers were able to spot EDER MATEO pretty easily. When they tried to stop him, he led them on a brief foot pursuit around the area. He thought he was getting away, until he was stopped in his tracks by a Yonkers public works employee who saw him running from the Officers. This Good Samaritan got out of his car and knocked EDER MATEO to the ground, allowing the closely pursuing Officers to apprehend him. EDER MATEO was charged with Grand Larceny 4th and Criminal Possession of Stolen Property 4th (both Felonies), among other misdemeanors. At his arraignment, he was released on his own recognizance.
This video shows what happens when everyone works together seamlessly to stop crime. A resident sees a crime and quickly calls it in allowing Officers to get on the scene quickly, Officers flood the area to ensure the suspect can’t get away despite his attempted fleeing, finished off by a Good Samaritan who saw an opportunity to help our Officers capture a suspect and took that opportunity- right to him.
To any future thieves planning to commit these crimes in Yonkers- pick somewhere else. Our residents, Officers, and City employees will not stand by and allow you to victimize people in this City. You will be apprehended and delivered to the court system to answer for your actions.
