August 1780 was a critical month in the American Revolution in the Carolinas. Three battles in succession set the final stage for the future of the region: Hanging Rock on August 6, Camden on August 16, and Musgrove’s Mill on August 19. The great Continental defeat was bracketed by Patriot militia victories—it would be this “Backcountry War,” fought between opposing neighbors and the rise of Nathanael Greene that would drive the regular army clashes out of the Carolinas and into Virginia.

We have such a great day in the Fourth of July. While we can never recapture the thunderbolt that crossed the colonies that summer, we should pause to reflect on what that declaration meant—what those who founded our nation were telling the world—that a congress of citizens could deliberate and compromise for a common goal of creating a new constitution, allowing fundamental freedoms under law. They succeeded in a remarkably short period of time, conducting a successful war to physically establish a country and creating a document to govern the new nation. Can you imagine that today! I am grateful for these freedoms.

The weekend before last, at the Fort Plain Conference on the American Revolution, I had the pleasure of meeting many enthusiasts and scholars of the American Revolution era, including four of our authors who were presenting their books. The conference was well attended and the setting was spectacular: the beautiful Mohawk River valley. Visiting this corner of the world is something that should be on any traveler’s list, and the added benefit of a history conference makes for a most satisfactory weekend. If you were not able to attend, no worries: much of the proceedings were filmed by C-Span, so in the coming months, you will able to enjoy these presentations, too!

Our Small Battles series, edited by Mark Edward Lender and James Kirby Martin, keeps growing! This week we released the sixth uniform volume, The Battles of Fort Watson and Fort Motte, 1781. This book recovers two American victories along the British supply line across the South Carolina backcountry that were critical to the success in the Southern Campaign.

Written by historian and archaeologist Steven D. Smith, the book not only provides an account of the two actions, but also demonstrates how the archaeology of the battlefields enable us to get a much clearer picture of what actually occurred. Through this evidence Smith is able to answer lingering questions about these battles, such as whether flaming arrows were used
