"My mother could always make me happy. She never had a bad day. I used to visit her every day, but she got sick and I lost her last year. I always wanted to give back all the love she had for me so I decided to take her on a real holiday. I saved up for a year, and on her 50th birthday I took her to Mallorca. I took her to restaurants, I bought her ice cream, and we went for long walks. She said it was the best holiday she ever had. I miss her and think of her every day..."

Deputy Beall was dispatched to a residence in the County for a report of a childbirth.

Casper Public Safety Communications Center dispatchers relayed that a woman was in labor and at home with only her 13-year-old son.

Deputy Beall was en route to the home when he received dispatch information that the baby had been delivered. When he arrived he found Mom, Courtney, and baby, Michaela, were both conscious and alert, and appeared okay. While EMS personnel assessed them, Deputy Beall learned that Courtney's 13-year-old son Luke had in fact delivered his breech baby sister. Courtney was expecting to deliver later that week due to the complications, but little Michaela wasn't waiting on anyone!

Deputy Beall recognized Luke's efforts as brave and heroic. At just 13-years-old he acted quickly and without hesitation in helping his Mom, and ensured that they were comfortable until Deputy Beall and EMS arrived.

Deputy Beall was so impressed with Luke's actions, he and Corporal Sheets presented Luke with our Sheriff's Office patch and challenge coins to forever remember this significant event in his life.

"Luke was incredibly brave," said Deputy Beall. "He stepped up out of intuition to help his mom and baby sister. I'm extremely impressed with how calm and organized he was that night. To bring a sibling into the world is so special, it's truly remarkable."

Luke shared with us that he knew it was what he needed to do for his Mom and baby sister, and he feels he will share a special bond with Michaela forever.

Fortunately, this unexpected emergency had a very happy ending and has become a story that everyone involved will remember forever!

"I love my daughter.

I have no clue what that wrap thing is in her hair.

But I love it.

And I love as she explores her blackness.

There are things I just can’t teach her because I’m a 62-year-old white dude.

I wish I could get her to like Motown.

That's my music.

The Four Tops.

The Temptations.

The Jackson Five.

Stevie Wonder.

But she‘s into that rap stuff.

Oh well.

It still doesn’t change the coolest thing of all.

Even though we look different:

I’m still her dad.

And she‘s still my daughter.

That’s the beauty of adoption."

For years, Mark Goralski, of Chicago, IL, battled Crohn's disease and kidney failure. He underwent a kidney transplant in 2011 but in time, his issues recurred. Mark passed away in September, 2018, leaving his family in grief.

To honor their dad, Mark's two daughters, Bethany, 25, and Hannah, 24, decided to donate their kidneys to strangers.

"I hope he would be really proud," Bethany told GMA. "We just wanted to make sure two less families had to go through what we went through."

A month after their father's passing, Hannah addressed Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago. The two sisters had surgeries one day apart in March 2019. Hannah hopes her family's story would encourage other young people to become living organ donors.

"I would tell them to do it, I don't regret it one bit," she commented.

A teacher at a special needs school in Nottingham, England, asked the students to write down two wishes. Daniel Harrison, who has autism, wrote that he would like to learn to drive and to make some friends.

That surprised his parents as they "didn't understand that he understood the theory of friendship". So on his 15th birthday, Daniel's father, Kevin, asked his Twitter followers to wish his son a happy birthday. Soon after that, comments from people around the world flooded his post.

The beautiful and supportive comments reached over 55,000. Daniel received birthday wishes from celebrities such as Mark Hamill, Russell Crowe, Sharon Stone, and Ariel Winter.

"It made me happy for Daniel, but you know, it's made me happy for parents and families and friends of autistic people across the globe," Kevin commented.

This is my dad. He and my mom live in the UK while I live in the USA. Since I saw them last my dad lost both of his legs. I was sent this just before Xmas, this is the first time my dad has stood up without having someone to help him since the amputation and I’m so proud of him.

FIRE CHIEF GETS HYPOTHERMIA SAVING DOG

Sunshine Volunteer Fire Department (SVFD) Fire Chief Steven Hatfield spent a full 30 minutes in freezing water to save this dog stranded in a culvert in Bardo, Kentucky. The Chief was actually treated for hypothermia after his determined efforts to save the whimpering dog who was wedged in a hard-to-reach area filled with icy and water.

Several residents had tried to rescue the dog themselves, but with no success. The fire department was called in and that's when the Chief got to work. He was later joined by the Harlan County Rescue Squad's Brandon Gilbert who ultimately got his arms around the dog, bringing her to safety.

The rescued dog, now named Grace, was taken to the Harlan Animal Shelter. Minnesota-based Safe Hands Rescue will be funding all of Grace’s medical care.

Skylar Fontaine, an 18-year-old from New Orleans, found a creative solution for her Marine boyfriend, Gage Moak, who couldn't attend senior prom with her due to his military commitments. Instead of dwelling on sadness or anger, Skylar asked Clay, Gage's two-year-old brother, to stand in for Gage during the prom pictures. The two-year-old looked irresistibly cute and even hammed it up, saying "Cheese!" during the photo session, creating an atmosphere of joy and laughter. Skylar shares a close bond with Clay, who always greets her with a hug. The viral response to Skylar's Twitter post showcased the power of small gestures and the significance of staying connected with loved ones, even in challenging circumstances. The experience highlights the transformative impact of having a loved one serving in the military and the valuable life lessons it imparts. Skylar's story reminds us to cherish the little things and appreciate the sacrifices made by military personnel and their families.

My parents were married for 55 years. One morning, my mom was going downstairs to make dad breakfast, she had a heart attack and fell. My father picked her up as best he could and almost dragged her into the truck. At full speed, without respecting traffic lights, he drove her to the hospital.

When he arrived, unfortunately she was no longer with us.

During the funeral, my father did not speak; his gaze was lost. He hardly cried.

That night, his children joined him. In an atmosphere of pain and nostalgia, we remembered beautiful anecdotes and he asked my brother, a theologian, to tell him where Mom would be at that moment. My brother began to talk about life after death and guesses as to how and where she would be.

My father listened carefully. Suddenly he asked us to take him to the cemetery.

"Dad!" we replied, "it's 11 at night, we can't go to the cemetery right now!"

He raised his voice, and with a glazed look he said: "Don't argue with me, please don't argue with the man who just lost his wife of 55 years."

There was a moment of respectful silence, we didn't argue anymore. We went to the cemetery. With a flashlight we reached her grave.

My father sat down, prayed, and told his children: "It was 55 years... you know? No one can really talk about true love if haven't done life with a person."

He paused and wiped his face.

"She and I, we were together in the good and in the bad." he continued. "When I changed jobs, we packed up when we sold the house and moved. We shared the joy of seeing our children become parents, together we mourned the departure of loved ones, we prayed together in the waiting room of some hospitals, we supported each other in pain, we hugged one another each day, and we forgave mistakes."

And then he paused and added, "Children, that's all gone and I'm happy tonight. Do you know why I'm happy? Because she left before me. She didn't have to go through the agony and pain of burying me, of being left alone after my departure. I will be the one to go through that, and I thank God for that. I love her so much that I wouldn't have liked her to suffer..."

When my father finished speaking, my brothers and I had tears streaming down our faces. We hugged him and he comforted us, "It's okay. We can go home. It's been a good day."

That night I understood what true love is. It is more than just romanticism and s*x, it's two people who stand beside one another, who are committed to one another ... through all the good and bad that life throws at you.

I laugh when I look at this shot - one in a million chance of capturing the precise moment when these birds are locked in eye to eye!

Out in my boat fishing one morning, I noticed that an eagle was being harassed by a blue jay on the shoreline next to my cabin. The blue jay’s relentless attacks were only mildly irritating to the eagle. The big bird’s facial expression was one of pure disdain. Jays are fiercely territorial - the eagle had perched near the jay’s nest and the jay was determined to protect its young.

My boat floated closer and closer to the skirmish and I knew that I might be able to capture a special moment if I just kept shooting. I love the image for so many reasons. The eagle is protecting its most valuable secret weapon - its eyes - by sliding a thin membrane over its eye just as the jay flies by. The jay is executing a ninja move as it makes its escape. And I love the way the image illustrates the sheer contrast in size between the enormity of the eagle’s body and the small silhouette of the blue jay.

I’ll always be thankful that I was in the right spot at the right time.

In Bryam, Mississippi, 5-year-old TyLon Pittman called 911 to let police know there was a thief about to take his Christmas presents. Well, the police had Officer Lauren Develle respond to that call right away. Turns out, that thief TyLon was talking about… was… the Grinch.

The young boy had been watching Grinch movies and videos of him online and was just CONVINCED that his Christmas was in jeopardy… and he wanted police there to make sure that nasty green Grinch would not be able to get his hands on his Christmas presents.

Well, Officer Develle was quite taken aback by that; and so was TyLon’s mom when she found the police officer at her door saying the young boy had called in about a thief.

Officer Develle asked TyLon what he would do if the Grinch showed up and actually tried to steal his presents. And TyLon replied he wanted her to come back and take him to jail. TyLon said he would wrestle him to the floor and hold him there until police arrived.

Says TyLon: “I’m going to say put your hands behind your back and get down on the ground, then when he gets on the ground, I’m gonna say, ‘Why are you stealing Christmas?”

But the officer kindly and patiently told young TyLon that she could assure him that the Grinch would not steal his Christmas. She also told TyLon that when she was younger, her dad would always wear Grinch pants on Christmas morning, adding: “Growing up seeing the Grinch every Christmas was my favorite thing.”

10/04/2024

"I don't think our kids know what an apron is. The principal use of Grandma's apron was to protect the dress underneath because she only had a few. It was also because it was easier to wash aprons than dresses and aprons used less material. But along with that, it served as a potholder for removing hot pans from the oven.

It was wonderful for drying children's tears, and on occasion was even used for cleaning out dirty ears.

From the chicken coop, the apron was used for carrying eggs, fussy chicks, and sometimes half-hatched eggs to be finished in the warming oven.

When company came, those aprons were ideal hiding places for shy kids..

And when the weather was cold, Grandma wrapped it around her arms.

Those big old aprons wiped many a perspiring brow, bent over the hot wood stove.

Chips and kindling wood were brought into the kitchen in that apron.

From the garden, it carried all sorts of vegetables. After the peas had been shelled, it carried out the hulls.

In the fall, the apron was used to bring in apples that had fallen from the trees.

When unexpected company drove up the road, it was surprising how much furniture that old apron could dust in a matter of seconds.

When dinner was ready, Grandma walked out onto the porch, and waved her apron, and the men folk knew it was time to come in from the fields to dinner.

It will be a long time before someone invents something that will replace that 'old-time apron' that served so many purposes.

Grandma used to set her hot baked apple pies on the window sill to cool. Her granddaughters set theirs on the window sill to thaw.

They would go crazy now trying to figure out how many germs were on that apron.

I don't think I ever caught anything from an apron - but love... "

“My previous husband was a US Marine, but as tough a man as he was, he was helpless to the heart disease and then the pneumonia that eventually took his life.

He came home from the hospital to spend his final days in hospice care. He was bedridden and connected to a lot of loud, scary equipment. Strangers came and went at all hours of the day and night.

But my beloved kitty Iris, who was normally shy of strangers and frightened of hissing sounds and loud machinery, sat herself between his ankles or against his side, and she did not move from him except to go to her litterbox or get a quick bite to eat. She always returned immediately, and settled back into her vigil with a quick few licks of his hand, just to let him know she was back again. He would lift his hand just a bit and stroke her, until he finally lost consciousness for good.

She stayed with him, and she comforted him, until long after he was gone. And when the mortician arrived to take his remains, my poor Iris ran through the house from room to room, wailing and howling like a creature lost in the darkest abyss.

She knew we were losing him; she gave him all the comfort she had to give from her tiny furry body, and she mourned him when he was gone.”

We ended up running out of my babies formula faster than anticipated due to a few issues with my breast milk production on Christmas. No businesses that were open sold even any brand of baby formula. Husband and I called every gas station in town, I was reaching out to any friends that had babies, I posted on a few local pages asking for help (admins had to approve posts and it took awhile to go through), after almost an hour we were giving up hope. In desperation to take care of my little man I message a lady on the Facebook market who had listed some baby bottles for giveaway and asked if she happened to have any she could spare, even just enough for 4 bottles, told her we'd pay her for anything she could spare, she insisted she didn't need anything for it. She packed up her kid, met us in town, and gave us an entire unopened can of formula; we gave her 1lb of locally roasted coffee in exchange because I know how expensive formula is and I couldn't give her nothing. I cried so hard, we are decently well financially and I hate to ask for help because I know others out there need it more. Pic is my little man.

“This is my daughter. She is 12, today she gave me a proud parent moment. It’s a bit long but worth the time to write. We are on vacation and she has had this $5 bill burning a whole in her pocket since we got down here. She has asked multiple times to buy something and I told her not to waste her money on it. Well today, we are at the boardwalk and she comes into the coffee shop where I’m in ordering me and the Wifey’s drinks. She looks at me and asks “dad can I give my $5 to a homeless person?” I chuckled and said no. Not realizing I was about to feel like an idiot. I didn’t realize that there was a homeless woman sitting out across from the coffee shop.

The lady wasn’t begging for money, but rather just sitting there alone and sad looking. We walk away and my daughter asked why I chuckled when she asked me about giving the lady her money. I told her I was sorry and didn’t realize there was a homeless woman outside. We walk around the boardwalk and on the way back by the woman was still sitting there, the entire time walking the boards mind you, not once did my daughter ask to spend her money. I looked at my daughter and told her yes, you can give her your $5. She said thank you for telling her not to use it previously and hopefully this woman can get food or something to help out even though it’s only $5.

She has such a big heart, we passed the woman once more on our way out, she gave my daughter a little wave of thanks and my daughter returned it. I told her she did a good thing, she was not bragging or telling everyone what she did but knew to be humble that she was able to help someone who needed it. Kids have a way of proving humanity still has a chance and that both bad habits and good habits are learned behavior.”
