Wrightsville Borough announces new outreach committee 'Wrightsville for ALL'
JEFF MCCLOUD | FOR LNP | LancasterOnline Mar 25, 2024

When: Wrightsville Borough Council meeting, March 4.

What happened: Council President Joseph Giandalia announced the formation of a new outreach committee comprised of two new council members, Sarah Barrett and Alicia Ferrari.

Details: Giandalia said he met with Barrett and Ferarri and said they had ideas for the borough that he thought could be best served by the committee.

Background: After the meeting, Ferrari said the committee is an outgrowth of a Facebook Group that she formed called “Wrightsville for ALL!” that has nearly 900 members. She said she envisions the committee as a way to inform the community about what’s happening on Borough Council and for the community to help each other.

More: Giandalia said the committee could pull together resources in town so residents can help other people. He suggested the outreach committee gather volunteers to help residents with mowing lawns or making some repairs to properties that have become an eyesore, or it could organize ways to provide meals to kids who can’t afford meals.

Quotable: “It’s not the borough’s job to spend money to feed or cut grass or anything, but I think we can be the vehicle to pull people together,” Giandalia said after the meeting.

Parking: Council considered two requests for one-hour parking in two locations in town. The first was for Alcova Mortgage on Hellam Street whose owner wasn’t present at the meeting but who township Secretary Tammie Hoff said verbally made the request. Council member Sarah Barrett presented the other on behalf of Historic Wrightsville on Locust Street, which wants one-hour parking on Sundays.

More: During discussion of Alcova’s request, council member Michael Gromling, who used to be the borough’s roadmaster and previously served on council, said requests must be made in writing — and even then, the borough can’t just install parking signs. A traffic study must be conducted, he said, and if conditions are justified council can approve parking restrictions. If there’s no justification, they are unenforceable.

Quotable: “The problem with those signs is you have to amend your ordinance,” Gromling said. “There has to be a traffic study because you are doing a legally enforceable sign.”

Cleanup Day: Council is planning the town’s third annual Cleanup Day from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Saturday, June 8. As in previous cleanup days, residents will be able to bring large trash items, electronics and other items not typically disposed of at curbside. Further details will be coming about the location.

Next meeting: Borough Council will meet again 6:30 p.m. April 1 at the borough office.

When: Wrightsville Borough Council meeting, March 4.
