According to many accounts the sport was invented in Worcester in 1880 by Justin "Pop" White, the owner of a pool and bowling hall on Pearl Street. By1955, there were about 12,000 candlepin bowlers playing in leagues in Worcester.

The Worcester Historical Museum's newest exhibit is, "Strikes, Spares and Deadwood: Candlepin Bowling."

Her father’s family toasted the holiday with glogg, a kind of mulled wine, and celebrated their Swedish heritage. Too young to imbibe, she remembers mostly its strong smell of alcohol. And she recalls her grandfather calling on her to blow out the flames over the bowl — something having to do with a legend about a blue-eyed blond from the north country.
