Have you ever wondered what that clappy thing is for when shooting a video? The reason we use it is to sync the video and the audio up. Rather than hitting record on the audio recorder and the camera at exactly the same time, or having to guestimate in the editing room, the "clap" gives us a visual and audio indicator to base the alignment up. If you're short a clapper you can also literally clap and it works just the same.
