I always have a blast with Vern & learn something new; today was no exception!

I really can't wait for everyone to see this episode with Vern sharing how UConn reviews applications and what they value most in applicants. Maybe most important, Vern talks a bit about UConn's "Why" and how admissions & enrollment professionals could help students and parents understand admissions decisions - especially bad news - if we better articulate our institutions' unique "Why".

Whew... our time flew by.

(If anyone from Vern's 3:00pm meeting today is reading this... I'm sorry! It's tough to let go of Vern when he's on a roll!)

The front lines of the college admissions testing battle have shifted. The College Board and the ACT have acknowledged is the “new normal”.

Both fear the logical evolution of equitable practices:

Standardized test scores have longstanding, problematic correlations with family income, race/ethnicity, and gender. Considering these scores - even optionally - reinforces power and privilege in admissions processes.

Almost 100 colleges are now test-blind (or “ ”) and that number will skyrocket in the coming years as more colleges evolve their admissions standards with a focus on equity.

The and the are flawed vestiges of yesterday’s admissions practices. The vast majority of colleges are acknowledging this now as they extend and/or make test-optional practices permanent policy.

I’m proud to work at a test-blind university that is among those leading the march toward more equitable admissions practices by eliminating standardized test scores and the influence they provide unfairly to those with power & privilege.
