Day 58 update for Ricky, he has had an alright day. He is definitely weak since surgery yesterday and not participating in all his other therapy he was before at UTSW. He did get up today in a chair but no other physical therapy. He also got moved to a regular room late this afternoon. The physicians at Clement’s hospital where he is now are planning to talk to the neurosurgeon in Abilene hopefully Monday to get status of the reattachment for his skull bone flap. The social worker is also working on another rehab facility, this one is in Houston and the name is TIRR Memorial Hermann. The initial insurance process was submitted and hopefully we will hear something next week. So the next step is whether he will go back to Abilene and get skull bone flap reattached before next rehab and if the Houston facility accepts him. The great news about Houston is that Melissa will have access to a one room efficiency apartment to stay free of charge. That would be very helpful. Prayers for him to regain some strength and for the Houston rehab facility to be approved. Thank you all for all the prayers, love and support❤️

Day 57 update for Ricky, he slept ok last night in new hospital. He went back for surgery at 11:00 this morning with ENT. They used a balloon and dilated his airway and also used a laser to remove some scar tissue from previous trach, and injected steroids. Surgery went well . With having surgery that meant having another IV, and also being hooked back up to all the monitoring devices for bloop pressure, pulse oxygen level and heart rate. Unfortunately you all know how that has gone over with him!!!!! NOT WELL at all. He pulled out one IV earlier and has tried to get out of bed, so they had to give him medication to calm him down. Hopefully tomorrow all monitors can be removed and he can be moved to a regular room. On another note we did also receive bad news about the neuro rehab in Lubbock. It is out of network so he was denied. Not sure how it ever got submitted if it’s out of network but that’s another story and our cousin Michelle has been working on that all afternoon as well. Please pray that tomorrow brings some positivity with him and that all monitors can be removed so he is less agitated. They are going to test his urine again tomorrow to make sure the UTI is gone. Prayers for the insurance process and finding an in network rehab that will accept him. As always thanks again for all the prayers, love and support from everyone❤️

Day 56 update for Ricky, he had a very eventful day. Started off with difficulty breathing and rapid response called to his room early this morning. They started an IV did labs and a cervical (neck) CT scan. They tested for Covid and flu. Both tests came back negative. They called ENT to evaluate and CT discovered that his airway is narrow and may be due to the trach being in for so long. After a very busy day they decided to transfer him to Clements hospital which is 4 miles away from UTSW rehab where he is now. He was transferred this evening and is in surgical ICU. He will have surgery tomorrow but not sure of the time as of yet . He will have dilation to open his airway with balloon and steroids. If the final process for insurance is approved for the rehab in Lubbock, he will be transferred from Clement’s to Lubbock as soon as he is stable. He he procedure tomorrow is done with a scope and supposedly fairly simple. If for some reason insurance denies the rehab in Lubbock then he will remain in Clement’s hospital until they can find an another neuro rehab. So obviously not a normal therapy day but at least answers to his difficultly with his breathing. Melissa is allowed to stay in his room with him so that is a huge plus. A friend of Ricky and Melissa, Joey Horton, came to the rescue and helped Melissa with getting to the other hospital. So thankful for such great friends❤️ We ask for prayers that surgery will go well tomorrow and for all the medical staff. We appreciate each and everyone so very much for all the love and support❤️ Although Melissa was in tears for a large portion today and worried sick, she did have a little dose of laughter while getting ready for transfer.

Day 55 update for Ricky, He had a pretty good day. He did finally get accepted to a neuro rehab in Lubbock. So now just waiting for final insurance approval. Tomorrow was supposed to be his last day in Dallas so as soon as they have final insurance approval we will have a date for transition. Another great progress forward, he was able to have the feeding tube removed!!!!! So he is no longer connected to any tubes or wires!!! He did an excellent job in physical therapy today and walked to other floors( of course with two person assistance). He did well in occupational therapy but did struggle with speech again. We are praying this will improve as this is his main therapy for his memory, focusing and thinking. We hey did have a case conference again with all physicians, therapy departments, and social worker, overall everyone stated he has made progress with transferring, walking, his strength and endurance. Please continue to pray and we thank everyone for all the love, support and prayers❤️

Day 54 update for Ricky, unfortunately not a great day today at all. As we have come to learn this is normal and it seems like we take two steps forward and then 1 step backwards but today feels like a mile backwards! They changed up his routine and started with speech therapy since that is his least favorite. The reasoning was hoping to start it after breakfast before he is too tired and hoping to get less agitation from him. By the time it was his schedule for occupational therapy it all went south fast!!!!! He was not himself at all and very angry and combative. It was horrible from what Melissa said, and she was extremely upset today. They had to give him medication to calm him down and put him to bed. Thankfully the doctors met with Melissa afterward and they plan on going over his medication again to see if possibly changes can be made to help. He also was denied from his he third rehab in Austin. Basically he is not yet to the level for transitioning. I talked to social worker today and she said they will have a case conference with all the doctors and all 3 therapy departments to re-evaluate. Please pray for a better day tomorrow and for Melissa. Today was the worst day yet and it is taking a toll on her. He did have another friend visit today, Crystal Baugh, unfortunately she witnessed the episode today. I’m glad she was there for Melissa and before he got so upset it sounds like he did enjoy his visit with her as well. Thank you all for following along his recovery journey and for all the support, love and prayers❤️

Day 53 update for Ricky, today was a great day from beginning to end! He participated in all 3 therapies and did great! He ate amazing all day as well and his appetite has definitely increased. His weight has increased by almost 4lbs in less than a week! I was there for his lunch and was shocked how much food he had on his plate and he ate almost all of it. I also learned a magic cup is is a favorite for him. It is small pudding like container that is full of calories and protein. It is ice cream but when it melts it softens like pudding not like liquid. The nurse crushed his afternoon medication and mixed in. He loved it. The crushing of medication is necessary due to chocking. He is not able to have liquids and has to have thickening agent in any form of liquid. He had speech therapy right after lunch and I was a little worried since I know this is his least favorite therapy and usually when he becomes the most agitated. He actually did great but he is not able to answer most questions, like the name of people in room, names of his children or grandchildren. What city he is in. He definitely recognizes his friends and family but names are not there yet. He had many visitors this afternoon and we moved to larger room at end of hall with a great view. I showed him pictures of family members and he smiled, I told him how we have kept track of his journey with social media and how countless people are following his story and praying for him❤️. He was appreciative and seemed in awe. His mannerisms are exactly him as well as his speaking (whispering). Hopefully tomorrow Melissa will know more from the rehab in Austin and fingers crossed he will be accepted🤞🏻. They have also made an adjustment to his schedule so that speech will be first tomorrow and hopefully that will help with his agitation. As always we so appreciate everyone for all the prayers love and support❤️. Below are pics from all his visitors today.
