Two years after President Joe Biden signed the bill making Juneteenth a federal holiday, and three years after Gov. Phil Murphy made it a state holiday, events will be held throughout North Jersey celebrating this important day in the African American community.

The national holiday for the end of slavery will be marked by silent walks, cemetery tours, concerts, fireworks and other celebrations across NJ.

The co-founder of a Teaneck organization and a Montclair preservation group are among the five honorees for next month's YWCA Northern New Jersey 2023 Racial Justice Awards.

The event on April 19 at the Montclair Art Museum will see the awards go to five recipients who, according to the YWCA, "demonstrate leadership by working to eliminate racism and promote peace, justice, freedom and dignity for all."

A three-candidate team who ran for the school board in the Bergen County town of Franklin Lakes, outside of New York City, finished as the top three in a four-person race. Kim Ansh, Kate D'Agostino and Scott Loia all ran on a platform that included opposing CRT, saying on their page that "teaching CRT leads our kids to associate themselves with a level of victimization which leads to weakness and entitlement."

In Bergen County, there are several African American burial sites including the African-American Baptist Church Cemetery in Bergenfield, a grassy field on a suburban dead-end street where only a historical marker indicates that a burial site once existed.

Throughout New Jersey, there are sites both visible and obscure where African Americans were buried. Places that are shrines to ancestors long past.
