Reviewing some older drawings while doing a little updating on my website and this is still one of my very favorites.

"Silver Hearth Bride"
Pen & Ink
Drawn as a commissioned piece, this beautiful bride and scenery was a challenge as I attempted to render the transparency in her gown and reflections of what must have been a recent rain on the decking boards... technically speaking, it's still one of my personal favorites. The original drawing hangs at a popular local wedding venue, Silver Hearth Lodge on Bent Mountain, Virginia. I have gotten married in a number of places, but unfortunately this wasn't one of them😂(laughter at such things is a very important and effective coping mechanism by the way). If you're planning nuptials, I can promise that you won't regret looking into this perfect spot built by a friend, much of it with his own hands. It's impressive.

Finally finished this portrait of my grandson Carsen. I learned a couple of valuable things doing this one. First, in the future if I have a project involving plaid, charge extra and second is to accurately map out that design in the working drawing and not to “wing it” on the fly, haha. It’s not accurate but only a representation of plaid. Yikes.

I'm flattered to have been asked to attend this years invitation only Artisan Showcase in Rocky Mount. I've got lots of drawings framed up and waiting to fill that empty spot on the wall with a smile or memory. I was given the opportunity by one of my page followers. Lucky for me, she also happens to be the host of the show! We have't met yet Kathy Price of JP Leatherworks but thanks so much for asking and we will meet this Saturday! I'm looking forward to it.

I’ll be set up in Rocky Mount this Saturday on the main drag (tanyard road near the Pell Ave exit, previously the music store) with about 30 other vendors at the Southern Sparkle Boutique. Stop by if you’re in town.

“Life”, being the cruel taskmaster and formidable opponent that has proven to be, wins again. I’ve made an adult decision. (For all of those the just fell over, sorry for that. I should have given you a warning. I’ve decided that I really want the morning light, it’s so awesome this time of year. I love the long shadows. So I have postponed skipping school until tomorrow. I know…the fun of being spontaneous is gone now that it’s planned. It’s not the same as being spontaneous but I can look forward to it. I’m not a big proponent of making plans. They tend to only disappoint me but there’s really not a lot of choice but to keep on trying 😬 (there may be a little pearl of wisdom in there somewhere 😉).

Hmmm. Kinda got that feeling like when you when in high school and the idea that you could skip school enters your mind. Only this time by reorganizing my “to do” list and making today the day that I just take a turn and keep driving. The awesome part is that I want some good new things to draw and need to take some photos so I can say that I’m working😉and wouldn’t be lying, hehe. Most know the kinds of things that I like to draw. If anyone had a cool suggestion for me of a place/thing to draw, let me know! I declare this “finger in the wind day”!

Not surprisingly to me, I managed to double book this day! Both were events that I very much wanted to do equally but I had to make a tough decision. So rather than be in Rocky Mount, I will be in my old neighborhood in Roanoke on the 7th and I hope to see a lot of my Roanoke people. I've sold at quite a few Franklin County events and generally do really well, but felt like my work may also find an audience here and will only find out if I show up! Check out all the talented folks that will be there as well.

Tada! After considerble additional work on this one after I thought it was "done", it's done. I hadn't intended to do a lot more to than what was seen in the last post, however an additional "little accident" required some more work to save it. Not coffee this time but a leaking pen that I ran my hand through before realizing it! AARG! The darkest area under the front left bumper got a large blob of ink that was NOT intentional so I had two options. Cover it or toss it. Fortunately it was in an area that made sense for a dark shadow. Once I did that the whole thing seemed unbalanced...hence the additional work in the branches and sky. Pretty good save I think. Unless I mentioned it, nobody would know. Damn pens are awesome, but also dangerous!!

I'll be in Buena Vista this Saturday and really looking forward to it. Come check out Mountain Day, 2024! The layout map has over 100 different vendors lined up and down 2 streets...looks like fun! You'll get your money's worth just from the beautiful views alone (hence the name Buena Vista;) Stop by and support local artists and vendors working hard to earn a living doing what they love to do.

I really enjoyed meeting so many great people yesterday. The weather up on the mountain in Floyd was stellar and I found new homes for several drawings, confirming that at on some level people can relate to what I’m doing which is satisfying. I do however need to revisit what looked good on paper for displaying the artwork that didn’t play out like it did in my dry run. Even with tensioners, the cables I’ve run from side to side want to sag more than looks good. The oak frames are definitely heavier than your standard off-the-shelf versions. Dunno, I may try something that should fix it but considering scrapping the idea altogether or trying something else. The beauty was that a few cables are fast to put up and take down, and easier to tote around vs panels
