Chuck Copeland Weather - NCHurricane.com Tracking extreme weather affecting Eastern North Carolina since 2003. NCHurricane.com is not to be used for making life or death decisions.

Started in 2003 as a small weather information page on my familiesโ€™ stock car racing website, NCHurricane has undergone many changes over the last 18 years. The website, as well as the Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Periscope and YouTube pages are all a one-man job. I am a long-time weather enthusiast and love to explore and learn all types of weather phenomena. Tropical weather in the Atlantic and

the many storms that have have affected my home of North Carolina have always fascinated me, hence the name I chose for the website - NCHurricane. I always welcome feedback from my followers, so please let me know if there is anything that I can do to improve your experience on any of the platforms that I cover. It is merely a link resource site for finding information. I poured over snow reports from across the state last night and put together a map of some totals.

This is preliminary, and not official, but just a guide as to what fell and where.

Obviously the Outer Banks were the big winners in NC, as well as much of Eastern NC.

A historic, once-in-a-lifetime event for the Gulf Coast.

The second photo is focused on our area in eastern North Carolina, where the Outer Banks was the big winner for snow totals. Nags Head and Kill Devil Hills had official reports of 9", but I would almost bet that someone on the OBX hit 10".

In the third photo, you can also see (in the ellipse) where Kerr Lake appears to have created a lake-enhanced band of snow, stretching from the NC/VA border to just north of Raleigh.

How cool is that? I hope you all safely enjoyed the snow.
Now get ready for dangerous cold tonight.
Someone is going to hit single digits....

The uptick in totals for our area is partially due to this reconnaissance flight by The NOAA Hurricane Hunters yesterday, sampling the Gulf conditions for model injestion.

Better data in, better solution out.

So, ENC, you can thank the Hurricane Hunters for your snow increase.

Precip aside, next week will be COLD.
We're talking "pipe-busting" cold for our area.

Some areas of inland ENC may stay below freezing for 36+ hours, if current solutions come to fruition.

If you haven't winterized your property yet, now is the time.

The snow and ice storm continues this afternoon across the Carolinas, Virginia, and the Ohio and Tennessee Valleys. Expect up to 4/10 of an inch of ice in portions of the Carolinas/GA and 3-5 inches of snow for the southern Appalachians & southern Virginia. Dangerous travel conditions, power outages, and downed branches are the greatest hazards directly related to the storm, with cold temperatures following the storm posing a hazard for those whose power is knocked out.

The NC word of the day...

"VIRGA"
..anytime you hear this word, scream real loud at your radar.

Virga occurs when rain (or snow) falls from the clouds but evaporates before reaching the ground. This often shows up as precipitation echoes on radar, especially when the radar beam is higher above the ground.

Winter Weather timeline for Friday, since this is the number one question, I put together a timeline map of when winter precipitation will likely start falling across the state on Friday. I will note that, thanks to the extremely cold weather over the last few weeks ground temperatures are very cold, so as soon as snow/sleet/ freezing rain starts falling, it'll stick to everything. I expect road conditions to go downhill quickly through the afternoon and evening. Don't take this timeline literally but it gives you a good range of when precipitation will start falling based on the latest data.

My forecast remains mostly on track, I am looking over data this morning and will adjust the maps slightly. The main thing is I'll pull the Freezing rain/sleet/snow line a little further east/NE across parts of Eastern NC as a brief period of freezing rain/snow is possible, mainly in the orange area, which will reflect my new map. Totals are about the same for all areas, but I might adjust them a tad in some areas.

The Bottom Line: There will be a winter storm impacting a good portion of North Carolina Friday into Saturday morning, and hazardous travel is likely to last on and off into the weekend, improving by Sunday into Monday. It'll not be the end of the world; there is no reason to panic, but if you have plans Friday afternoon/evening into Saturday morning, you might need to adjust some stuff. I'll keep you posted.
