Winnsboro Area Skywarn

Winnsboro Area Skywarn Real time severe weather updates for Winnsboro along with most of North Texas and the Arkalatex.

10/05/2023

Seeing radar estimated rainfall around 2-4” widespread for Wood/ SE Hopkins. Anywhere from Mt Pleasant to Texarkana essentially following I-30 nearly perfectly, widespread totals are around 8-12” from this morning. Reports of accidents and flooding on I-30 from DFW to Texarkana are rolling in, not a good time to be out and about, stay home until at least daybreak if possible!

Fort Worth Naval Air Station anemometer measured a gust of 76MPH tonight 👀

Severe weather does look to be over for us, didn’t see anything busted up on my way through town coming home from work thankfully. It was however a treacherous drive, minor street flooding is currently ongoing and will only be exacerbated by more rain. If you see water across the road, just turn around, it may look like only an inch or two but if the road is washed out it can and will float your car and take it downstream. Hopefully everyone is okay and didn’t sustain any property damage.

All of northeast Texas is under a flood watch through Thursday morning. Widespread totals will be 2-4” with isolated higher amounts to 6-7” possible. Severe weather is not anticipated currently for our area but that could change like with all forecasts.

Looks like everything is behaving at this point, we need the rain and I don’t mind a few rumbles of thunder. Be safe everyone.

09/25/2023

As of 11PM the severe thunderstorm watch was extended until 1AM for Hopkins County and areas to the west. This watch did not include Wood county or Franklin County and it currently hasn’t been expanded to include any counties east of Hopkins. Even if you are not in the watch area severe thunderstorms can and frequently do happen outside of counties in the outlined watch location. Much of the storm we dealt with earlier happened far outside the watch polygon.

I’d love to say all is clear tonight but I do have some concern about this new cluster of cells moving in from the northwest, lightning and heavy rainfall will be the most likely hazards but scattered hail/damaging wind may also be a hazard beginning sometime around 12AM into the very early Monday morning hours.

09/25/2023

With the watch expiring in roughly 10 minutes, it’s been noted by SPC Meteorologists working graveyard this evening that thunderstorms continue to try and develop near the weak front to our west. Additionally mixed-layer instability persists around 2000-3000J/kg in some areas meaning the energy still exists and is more than enough for storms in that environment to become severe. An extension or a new watch may be needed as the current one expires

09/25/2023

Watching some storm development to the west trying to establish itself in the lingering warm and unstable environment. The air where storms have already passed over will be more stable so we will see if it can find enough energy to be an issue over the next hour or two.

The cell we have been dealing with over the past couple of hours has now taken a more eastern path. Upshur, Southern Wood, Gregg counties are now under a new severe thunderstorm warning. This includes the Holly Lake Ranch, Gladewater, Gilmer, and Big Sandy communities.

09/25/2023

So far we are still in the clear for Winnsboro, Mineola/Lindale is still getting hit pretty hard. I will keep an eye on everything as the Severe thunderstorm watch will not expire until 11PM. Watch doesn’t seem like it will expand east for now to include counties east of Hopkins, Rains, Van Zandt, as the storms are still moving in a SSE direction along a weak boundary layer. Some development is possible into the late evening but is highly dependent on many environmental factors and may not occur at all.

09/25/2023

Reports of some damage near Commerce, mostly minor so far some power lines down. More significant damage in and near Emory and at Emory Fire Department in particular as that’s where the Spotter report was made, flag poles at FD were bowing, bay doors we’re bowing in and reports of significant tree damage and power lines down on 69 NW of Emory.

Quitman/Mineola/Lindale/Tyler all of these communities are now under a severe thunderstorm warning. Hazards expected are 60mph winds and quarter size hail.

09/25/2023

Couplet I was seeing has weakened and mostly gone away, currently not expecting any new tornado threats nearby for now. This will be a straight line wind and hail producing storm though still. As well as near constant lightning and very heavy rain.

09/25/2023

All of Wood County under a special weather statement for gusty winds around 50mph and pea size hail in a few areas.

*Update* Couplet has now weakened and disappeared.

Tornado warning has now expired and a new severe thunderstorm warning has been issued. The SSE movement of this supercell and other storms around north TX should keep them out of our area for now but I will continue to keep an eye on things.
