We are closely monitoring the upcoming Supreme Court decision on United States v. Rahimi, which is set to make a decision soon.

💭 What is the U.S. v. Rahimi case about? The Supreme Court will decide if a federal law prohibiting possession of fi****ms by people subject to domestic violence protection orders is Constitutional—in other words, if an abuser who has a protection order or restraining order against them can legally keep their guns.

We're staying tuned to developments to ensure survivor safety remains a top priority and will continue to share resources and support 💜

National Minority Mental Health Awareness Month is observed each July to bring awareness to the unique struggles that racial and ethnic minority communities face regarding mental illness in the United States.

Mental health includes our emotional, psychological, and social well-being. It affects how we think, feel, and act. It also helps determine how we handle stress, relate to others, and make healthy choices. Mental health is important at every stage of life, from childhood and adolescence through adulthood.

Racial and ethnic minorities often suffer from poor mental health outcomes due to multiple factors, including lack of access to quality mental health care services, cultural stigma surrounding mental health care, discrimination, and overall lack of awareness about mental health.

Understanding Trauma

Trauma is an emotional response to a terrible event like an accident, r**e, or natural disaster. Immediately after the event, shock and denial are typical. Longer term reactions include unpredictable emotions, flashbacks, strained relationships, and even physical symptoms like headaches or nausea.

When a person experiences a distressing event or series of events, such as abuse, a bad accident, r**e or other sexual violence, combat, or a natural disaster, they may have an emotional response called trauma.

Immediate reactions after a traumatic event include shock and denial, while more long-term reactions may include mood swings, relationship challenges, flashbacks, and physical symptoms. These responses may be concerning to the person experiencing them and those around them, but they are normal responses to traumatic events.

While the trauma itself was unavoidable and the responses are normal, they can still be problematic and dangerous. Professional support from a licensed mental health professional can help with coping and recovery.

April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month and this is a time for advocates, survivors, family, friends, and the community to come together to talk openly about sexual violence to support survivors, increase knowledge and awareness, and identify strategies and resources to prevent sexual violence. Sexual violence is sexual activity when consent is not obtained or freely given. Sexual violence impacts communities and affect people of all genders, sexual orientations, and ages. Perpetrators of sexual violence are usually someone the victim know. Sexual violence can occur in person, online, or through technology, such as posting or sharing sexual pictures of someone without their consent, or non-consensual sexting.
