✨️Women in Business Spotlight ✨️
Charly Bass-Davis
CEO, Wilmington Community Growth Organization; Owner, Jerry Deen’s and Steel Development

Charly Bass-Davis was inspired to enter the fields of community development and real estate after growing up in Wilmington’s inner city during a time when Black-owned businesses and homeowners thrived.

That same commitment to community led Bass-Davis to launch and chair the Wilmington Community Growth Organization, where she advocates for housing, economic growth, and cultural development. Along with her nonprofit work, she owns two businesses: Jerry Deen’s, a family-run soul food restaurant that honors her late mother, and Steel Development, a construction company focused on renovating homes.

✨️Women in Business Spotlight ✨️
Julia Keleher
Executive Director, First State Educate

The most important leadership moments aren’t about being the one in front, Julia Keleher says. They’re about helping others find their footing when the ground is shifting. “Time and again, I’ve faced decisions that carried enormous weight. What those moments taught me is that clarity, courage, and persistence aren’t just traits of a leader—they’re what you create for others when you lead well,” she says. Keleher’s advice to young women building their own path is to know your value, seek truth-tellers, and create systems that multiply impact.

Marnie Custom Homes (MCH) and architect Aga Sokolow/Bernardon created this unusual house on Loop Canal, Bethany Beach, for two siblings and their families.

Set along Loop Canal, the 5,000-plus-square-foot home—architecture by Aga Sokolow/Bernardon—had to be configured with two families in mind. Owned by siblings (brother and sister), the house was created to support equivalent spaces—including two primary suites on opposite sides of the house, the key to the home’s privacy. “Each family has a wing,” Marnie Oursler says. “The main question was, ‘How do we all live together happily?’”

As many social drinkers participate in Dry January to start off the new year, it can be a challenge to change up the routine. If you’re used to hitting the bars or a local brewery for happy hour after work, you may be looking for a new place to hang out this month.
