On Tuesday, LeRon Montgomery, president of the local NAACP chapter, hosted a press conference to address “current race relations” of the Wilmington Police Department and Police Chief Donny Williams’ leadership. Montgomery was joined by supporters and NAACP members, as well as Sonya Bennetone-Patrick of the National Black Leadership Caucus of the Southeastern Region.

Oysters are the theme of the 2024 Cucalorus Film Festival, taking place Nov. 20-24, featuring 100 films, dozens of events and live performances, as well as plenty of opportunities to hobnob with filmmakers.

Like the bivalves’ strong ties to the coastal southeastern North Carolina community, an oyster’s metaphorical representation to Cucalorus is deep and multifaceted. It can inspire both love and aphrodisia — which many of its films will evoke this week — and is indicative of reincarnation, which Cucalorus has in bushels and pecks.

“This year we approached Cucalorus with the intention of having the feel of a family reunion,” Dan Brawley, chief instigating officer, said, noting many familiar faces are returning to share new works.

Unofficial results indicate the re-elected commissioners will be Republican incumbents Bill Rivenbark and Dane Scalise, with newcomer Democrat Stephanie Walker coming onto the board; new school board members include Democrats Judy Justice and Tim Merrick and Republican David Perry. There are plenty of ways to stay entertained this weekend, particularly in theater. Six productions are scheduled, including a jukebox musical at UNCW based on music by The Go-Go's, plus a musical on a children's claymation classic, just in time for Christmas.

Aside from theater, there is also comedy with national comic Nikki Glaser performing at Wilson Center, plus two fall festivals, a benefit concert and classical music with the state symphony.
