LET'S TALK ABOUT NEXT WEEK...

FIRST, TEMPS: SE NC (and a good chunk of the country for that matter) is in store for some of the coldest air in YEARS. How cold? Highs will be lucky to get to freezing during the day, and with overnight lows in the 10s, winds will make it feel like it's in the single-digits! If you're someone who operates a warming shelter, or someone who has outdoor pets, I can't stress the importance of extra cold weather protections-- ANIMALS, and most importantly, PEOPLE. I have real concerns for the homeless population, and for crews that work outside for hours on end. We're not used to this kind of cold!

NEXT, SNOW & ICE: You know I'll always shoot straight with ya, but this forecast is tricky. Much like a tropical low pressure system, this wintry low pressure system's track is the biggest variable. Models have come into better agreement about the chance of SNOW late Tuesday through, at the latest, midday Wednesday. As of this posting, EXACT AMOUNTS REMAIN UNCERTAIN, but there's a scenario where we could be looking at several inches of snow (historic perhaps?) or maybe just a small amount. There's a large "Boom or Bust" potential. We'll have a better idea this weekend how this will shake out with newer, and (hopefully) more consistent modeling.

That said, PLEASE keep tabs on the forecast through the weekend, as we expect to see some changes. Should a worst-case scenario unfold, travel would be difficult, and other impacts like frozen surfaces, power lines, etc. may present an issue, and we'd want you to be prepared.

I know, I know, northerners. This may seem like nothing to you, but if you're new to the area, please understand that wintry weather in SE NC does NOT happen often, and it takes a lot for a wintry system to come together.

I'll touch base again with you this weekend, but this is one of those cases, where everything may be coming together.

Take care, everyone.
