Jesse Owens was an Olympic sprinter and long jumper. He went to the 1936 Olympics in Berlin, Germany, where he won four gold medals. Owens had incredible courage to go to the Olympics in 1936, during the height of Nazi Germany and racist ideologies everywhere. Owens overcame physical, economic, and racial barriers to become one of the greatest athletes of all time, and the first world renowned African American sports star. In so doing, he publicly refuted bigoted attitudes toward African Americans and set an example for personal excellence and achievement in all of his endeavors.

Rosa Parks helped initiate the civil rights movement in the US when she refused to give up her seat to a white man on a Montgomery, Alabama bus in 1955. Her actions inspired the leaders of the local Black community to organize the Montgomery Bus Boycott led Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., the boycott lasted more than a year and ended only when the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that bus segregation was unconstitutional. Over the next half-century, Parks became a nationally recognized symbol of dignity and strength in the struggle to end entrenched racial segregation. #BlackHistoryMonthSpotlight #BHM #RosaPark
