There is so much sympathy for Lindsay Clancy and almost none for the children she killed — and that imbalance is horrifying.

Sarah Cain, cohost of Rise Right confronts the public reaction to the Lindsay Clancy mistrial head-on. The relief here isn't that she avoided conviction — it's specifically that she wasn't acquitted. But the deeper outrage is what came out about the jury itself: reports indicated that of the twelve jurors, eleven wanted to find her not culpable, and only one held out to hold her responsible for what she did. That is being described exactly as it should be: horrific.

Facts matter, and they're being erased in a public conversation increasingly shaped by TikTok videos that cherry-pick pieces of the story while ignoring vast swaths of the evidence that imply she was lucid enough to carry this greusome act out.

The erasure of the children who died from this conversation isn't a neutral oversight. It's a moral failure of public discourse, and it needs to be named as one.

Mother Miriam shares a story from time as a jail chaplain at Sybil Brand Institute for Women, the main women's jail in Los Angeles that became a lesson in grace she still remembers fondly.

At the time a Protestant, and not yet looking into the Catholic Church, she always carried her Bible with her. One day a sergeant, recently transferred from the men's compound because he'd grown disgusted with the inmates there — sat down next to her at lunch and unloaded. "You chaplains, you take the scum of the earth," he said, spewing venom. His complaint: all the chaplains ever do is tell inmates to open to "page 12," believe what it says, and they're suddenly saved — while he, one of the "good guys," gets nothing.

Mother Miriam said nothing. She finished eating, and the two walked back toward the women's compound in silence. Then she turned to the sergeant and asked, "Have you ever read page 12?" The sergeant — who'd invented the phrase himself — admitted he never had. So she told him what "page 12" really says: that there's a Savior who came for sinners. The sergeant's response cut straight to the heart of the Gospel: "What about us? What about us good guys?"

Her answer became the turning point of the whole exchange: "I'm sorry, Sergeant. He didn't come for you. Jesus said, 'I came not for the righteous, but for sinners.'" The sergeant said nothing more, but his face showed he understood.

Is a piece of paper ever real protection?

Father McTeigue, S.J. opens with the image of a domestic violence victim who thinks a restraining order means she can never be abused again, and uses it to frame a much bigger story: the Department of Justice's Weaponization Working Group report on the FBI's targeting of so-called "radical traditional Catholics."

The case traces back to January 2023, when the FBI's Richmond, Virginia field office drafted an internal report intended for distribution across the entire FBI — suggesting that communities of so-called "Radical Traditional Catholics" (RTCs) could be attracting or even generating "white supremacists" and racially or ethnically motivated violent extremists. According to the report, the "hallmarks" the FBI flagged as worth investigating included rejection of Vatican II, disdain for post-Vatican II popes, conservative family roles, rejection of modernity, and isolation — in other words, mostly features of ordinary Catholic life.

The report drew heavy backlash, and the FBI initially tried to characterize it as a misunderstanding. This year, the Bureau investigated itself and now says this was wrong and won't happen again... But is that really enough?

That same promise sounds a lot like the restraining order— a piece of paper that feels like protection but isn't backed by anything real.
