The I Love You Project

The I Love You Project Global interactive social-art project celebrating diversity and bringing people together. Images were captured digitally using an electronic microscope camera.

The I Love You Project® is a global initiative involving multi-media art installations in different cities around the world. Our first project took place in the neighborhood of Raval in Barcelona, Spain in March 2011. The exhibition at Galeria aDa in Raval ran from May 19 through June 4, 2011. The show included portrait photography, video, voice recordings, and music. It was an immersive experienc

e sharing the beautiful faces and voices of the people who live and work in Raval. This technology, which is actually a child's toy, creates unexpected images that play with skin tone, contrast, and light. Silent videos play with a delay, creating a dreamy quality to the images as people say "I Love You" into the camera in whatever language they prefer. Their voices were recorded separately to compose a soundtrack. Participants represented eighteen different languages reflecting the diversity of Raval. Furthermore, the experience itself - saying "I Love You" into the camera, caused participants to react in unexpected ways - showing the power of this phrase. This interaction, and the connection participants had with the artists and other participants, is what made this project so emotional. The community of Raval has experienced tension due to intolerance and crime. This community houses a large population of immigrants, and is predominantly working class. Through this project, we hope to unite the members of the community, and show Barcelona and the world that change is accomplished through love.

War. Pandemic. Politics. Grief. Religion. Power. Hate. Love. Borders.

I keep waiting for a calm time to begin connecting with family, friends, acquaintances. I realize now that the world is spinning so fast, there will never be the pause I hoped for.

Facebook was once a place for me to connect, but life these past few years hasn’t quite allowed the time. But I think of you all often, actually.

So, my plan now is to write; not sure which platform or format. But I begin here on this day and will move backwards in time.

I currently live in Berlin, Germany in the district of Neukölln. Look it up and you’ll see what’s going on here now - the fallout of the Israel-Hamas violence.

My gallery - LiTE-HAUS - is located on a quiet street in Rixdorf. A part of Neukölln with quaint architecture, cobblestones, and a large immigrant population - including Palestinians. I realize I’m in a position to share factual and current details to friends back in the USA, who aren’t sure what to believe these days.

Germany finds itself in a very awkward position in this conflict. And it’s expressing that in the streets of Neukölln.

If anyone saw news about the banned protests here, and the subsequent arrests, or wonder about what posts are true or false in this time of disinformation - I can tell you what’s really happening in Berlin. We live two blocks away from Sonnenallee where at this moment the Polizei & protestors are about to again clash.

I’ll start writing properly tomorrow, and link you to whatever platform I decide.

Meanwhile, you can see some of what my husband and I do for artists here in Berlin on the LiTE-HAUS website at www.lite-haus.net or the art project www.theiloveyouproject.net.

I wish you all a peaceful weekend. Looking forward to sharing.

LiTE-HAUS is a Berlin gallery and project space celebrating diversity. Exhibitions of contemporary art by emerging artists from Berlin and beyond.

The cool thing about exploring diversity in different cities is enjoying the quirks of a population while also finding our similarities. Here's video from LiTE-HAUS owner Debbie Davies' trip to Kyiv, Ukraine.

It's sad how the reaction to -19 includes racism. I lived near Chinatown in New York & appreciated small businesses operating there. Businesses close down - BEFORE stay-at-home orders - merely because the owners are Asian.
