A recent study indicates that cases of babesiosis, a parasitic disease, are on the rise in parts of Virginia thanks to the southward migration of its host, a northern variant of the blacklegged tick, also known as the deer tick.

Ticks infected with the parasitic disease babesiosis have been found in Chesapeake and Portsmouth.
