On our last day with :
Tell us about your latest favorite shoot. Don’t leave out any details. What was your shot list, where did you shoot, what was your role, what were you excited about the creative, who worked on the shoot with you, and any fun highlights?

RG: This is such a hard one because I truly enjoy aspects of every shoot I do but I think I’ll refer back to that big personal project I just started working on.

I’ve been sitting on this idea for over 2 years but it is soooo hard jumping into something of that magnitude because serious imposter syndrome takes over.

Well let me tell you, when I started sharing this project with people I wanted to collaborate with they were all in and supportive of it without even asking questions. In the end, I was the photographer/director/creative director and had an immediate team working with me of 6 people who were all donating their time to this project and this message.

Ultimately on our first shoot of two, we had over 20 people on set between the 2 days of shooting and they were all pumped to be there!

We shot stills and motion- one hero shot for each set and then detail shots. I was so excited about seeing this all come to life and see how much everyone else was into it as well because ultimately this was my baby but when we all came together to create this, it became a true collaborative effort and I could not have achieved this without all of them.

SFA: What a great project! We love hearing how the collaborative process brought the project to a new level and allowed you to move past imposter syndrome and bring to life your idea.

Thank you so much Rebecca for sharing your thoughts, journey and insights with us. We can’t wait to see what you create this year and see your project.

Want to know how to and why to have a crew? Rebecca spilling the beans today.

SFA: How big is your typical crew? How did you find them? What are their roles? How does having a crew help you produce higher-quality images?

RG: Guys! Your teams are everything! I am never that photographer who hides in an empty studio by myself creating, even though I know that works for some. Collaboration is truly a magical process and the earlier you realize you don't have to do it all and can bring people in who can do it best you will really start stepping up your game.

My crews usually range from 3 for a small test shoot up to 20+ for a bigger shoot/commercial shoot. I recently started shooting a big personal project where I had over 20+ wonderful creatives working side by side with me as a passion project and they were all in it to make magic.

Having a good solid crew makes all the difference. If you have a big shoot with a big shot list, make sure to bring in the right amount of people who will help you create the best possible imagery otherwise something will most likely suffer for it.

SFA: What do you love about the craft? Do you prefer to shoot in a studio or on location? Why?

RG: Photography is such a magical art. You are truly capturing a person, light, movement, moment that will never again exist. I am a studio girl through and through. I love the process of starting with an empty space and building something in it that will only live forever in those photos or videos. It is the way I've been able to create unique visions and projects where I have control over all the aspects and can make it look exactly how I envision with the help of fellow collaborators.

One more coming from Rebecca later this week. So stay tuned.

We're here with talking about mentors today.

SFA: Did you have a mentor(s) that helped shape your career? Any advice that's stuck with you over the years?

Rebecca: In my younger years I always sought out mentors. They all bought something to the table that I wanted know and learn and they always pushed me, sometimes harder than I would push myself.

One of my biggest mentors was my HS Art Principal who was the absolute best and most supportive person. On day one, she basically handed me a key to the darkroom, and told me to never stop shooting, and experimenting. She also taught me to not limit myself with the type of art process I chose but to try all the things that spoke to me because ultimately all these different forms of art I would try would help inform and push me harder in my photography.

Because of her I took mixed media, painting, figure drawing, sculpture, art history and learned so much in the process. To this day I don't just do photography, I also work in ceramics and a lot of my work is focused around figure drawing and female forms, not to mention how nice it is to have creative hobbies outside of photography as well.

I think the thing that most people do is stay within their comfort zones, and I was taught to always push myself outside of those comfort zones. Try new things, play, have fun, never take yourself too seriously, and enjoy the process.

SFA: Always striving to puch the boundaries and try new things. Love it. Stay tuned as we continue our conversation with Rebecca this week.

This week we're so excited to have Rebecca Grant on the feed. We asked Rebecca a bunch of questions about her craft and path, so be sure to check in over week to dive in with us.

SFA: Tell us about you. How did you find your path into photography?

Rebecca: I've been a creative soul from the very beginning and my love for photography, art and music truly began in my childhood, growing up in NYC and being exposed to galleries, museums and art programs that pushed me creatively.

I was inspired to create from a young age but truly started learning how a camera worked in High School. I spent most of HS in the darkroom, which is one of the most magical places and knew at that point that watching an image come to life in the developer was where I wanted to be, and what I wanted to do.

When I decided to further my photo education in college, is when my growth truly sprung forward by leaps and bounds. I was immersed in creative and technical photo-related classes every day for 4 years. I didn’t just learn about the creative side of the craft but learned a lot about the technical… how light works, how lenses work and everything in between.

This warehouse played a huge role in the 1890s ,
producing twine and oakum for the shipyards along the East River, it was also the birthplace of the famous wartime ship, the USS Monitor...

and today Terminal Stage 1 boasts the original brick and wood of the era and the building facade remains untouched from the 1890s.

For Chavarria, the venue was an easy choice as quoted in W's article by Kristen Bateman, he said, “It feels very, very New York to me to bring people into the space that I go to every day.” His studio is upstairs at the warehouse.

.miller.photography tell us:

* How big is your typical crew? How do you find them? What are their roles? How does having a crew help you produce higher-quality images?

"I have yet to shoot with a super large crew. I think the largest crew I have shot with is about 7, but it averages 3-5.

Sometimes it is just me, an assistant and a stylist, other times it's me, my assistant, a wardrobe stylist, a prop stylist, a model, HMUA, art director, and a producer. It all depends on the client.

I have found a lot of the crew that I work with through networking and just making friends in the industry. Often times a photographer friend will introduce me to a stylist friend, etc. Then we'll do test shoots together or we can recommend each other for jobs and get to work together!

There's nothing like getting to do creative work on a set WITH A FRIEND. Having a talented, friendly, and efficient crew allows everyone to focus on their specific area of expertise, and the images are always so much better when everyone comes together like that."

.miller.photograpy is back with more to share.

*Tell us about you. How did you find your path into photography?

I have loved all forms of art since I was very small, but fell in love with photography in middle school.

We lived in Hawaii at the time, and I would ride my bike all over the place with a disposable camera in tow, photographing anything and everything I found interesting.

When I turned 16, my dad gifted me an old Nikon (an N2000) and several lenses. It was the most amazing gift, and I went on to earn a BFA in photography. After graduating, however, I started a career in web development, and didn't really pick up a camera for ten years or so!

After the birth of my son, I rediscovered my love for it and slowly made my way from family photography to small business branding photography, and now to commercial and editorial work.

.miller.photography is in the house 🏡. Over the next few days, Krista will be sharing stories about her work and her journey into commercial photography. She focuses on beauty, products, and jewelry.

"My latest favorite shoot was a test shoot I was invited to participate in with another photographer. The concept was loose, but we made a plan to both shoot separate bodies of work within the same studio space, with the same models, wardrobe, etc.

We spent a total of about 4 days in a studio - 1 prep, 2 shoot days, and 1 cleanup day.

We had six models and a hair/makeup artist collaborating with us.

There were no constraints or shot lists - just experimentation with the props and wardrobe and sets that we had prepared.

Not only did the images turn out so amazing, I feel like the entire crew really enjoyed the experience and bonded in a way.

One of my favorite things about the shoot was that instead of box lunches, we did family style meals. It was so intimate and cozy, and I loved getting to know everyone.

Additionally, as a result of the amazing experience we had during our big test shoot I mentioned above, the other photographer and I are putting on an exhibit of the work, [at the Shed in Austin, happening Jan 20th] (check out the link in bio for details).

Kicking the week off with the talented .

*What you’re currently focused on?

My work is ever evolving, but in 2023 I rebranded to focus solely on Fitness and Healthy Lifestyle. As I hone my craft, I intend to push the boundaries of how I currently shoot, and I also am excited to work more as a motion director in the future. Onward and upward, always!

I have a workshop coming up on Jan 23rd at 12pm PT, where I'm sharing my process of how i niched down to scale up. The results led to my best year financially, more clarity and more energy.

Check out the link in our bio for all details.

*How big is your typical crew?

My typical crew is as big as the budget allows for, but the two things I don't like to live without are a digital tech and at least one lighting assistant. These two people are crucial to helping me create the best possible work I can within the time crunch of any job.

Be sure to check out more of Caydie's work on her website www.caydiemccumber.com

We're back with diving into her creativity and hearing about a favorite shoot from last year.

*What do you love the craft?

My favorite thing about commercial photography is just the massive energy exchange on set. [We love this too!]

Having a common goal that everyone is diligently working towards, with a fun and positive attitude makes work so fun.

My favorite thing about my role on set is creating a make-believe world that didn't exist before. From directing the look and feel of the space, the lighting, and all the way down to directing the talent, I adore the entire process of creating an image.

*Do you prefer to shoot in studio or on location? Why?

Studio or location, both are equally as fun to me. Studio might have one toe over the line though since it truly requires start-to-finish creativity.

*Tell us about your latest favorite shoot.

I recently had a shoot with Nike Well Collective photographing Megan Thee Stallion and Deepak Choprah.

We shot at a park on the west side of Los Angeles, and the shoot was primarily video. I had about 15 minutes with the talent to get stills, and it was one of the more challenging shoots that I've done.

The client wanted an on-camera flash look, which can be very inconsistent and so having extra time is crucial. Well, we didn't have extra time, so I had to do my best with the 15 minutes I was given.

The shots turned out great, and the client was thrilled with the images, which is the greatest feeling in the world.

Follow Caydie at and check her out on LinkedIn too, she very active over there. Plus she's doing a 1 hour workshop on Jan 23rd 12-1pm PT sharing her process and insight into niching down and the benefits she's seen first hand. You can read more at the link in bio.
