Hillside feed and seed originally opened its doors in 1949. It was later purchased by Orville Sander his wife Edna and his Brother Virgil and his wife Cletus in 1959. Orville’s son George and his wife Cathey took over the business when it moved in 1986. Originally they had only offered the standard farm store fare, but as the years went on the “And” grew to encompass a little bit of everything, from lawn ornaments and gardening supplies, to jams jellies and candy.
The store started off as a farm store on the fringes of the city, but as the city grew the store was encompassed by neighborhoods making it feel like it was always a part of the landscape. Hillside feed has been a cornerstone of the community, feeding furry and feathered friends, as well as enabling and educating growers of all skill levels and interests. They have also worked hard to support non-profits and other small businesses.
Whether you come to Hillside Feed for plants, feed, seed, or the cats (we know who you are 😉) we thank you for your enthusiastic support for all these years. The store now has had 5 generations of Sander working there, as well as many amazing seasonal and long time employees that became family. We are grateful for the dedication and pride in their work that helps us make the store what it is. We have the best team we could ask for that are the pride of their own families, as well as our Hillside one. Thank you Jeff, Craig, Debra, and Melissa, and everyone else who has been a part of the team up until now 😊
We have grown up loving the place and the people who shop here. It’s because of you that we are able to keep loving what we do, and we hope to continue serving and supporting the community for many years to come.
