Sinéad O'Connor ~ All Apologies
"Flashback: Sinéad O'Connor Covers Nirvana's "All Apologies" In 1995 ▿ Alessandra Schade ▿ July 28, 2023 ▿ In the days following Sinéad O’Connor’s death — snippets, soundbites & memories from the Irish singer’s life have circulated the internet, dusting off the heirlooms we’ve collected in our cobwebbed attics. As we hit play on deep cuts we may have forgotten about, or flip through photos we’ve never seen, we get to once again revel in the fierce vitality of an artist who defied rules & conformity. But one video in particular that has made its internet rounds, holds a unique piece of history that feels eerily sad & familiar. It’s O’Connor’s gentle cover of Nirvana’s “All Apologies” from the band’s third album, In Utero.
At its face, it’s a stunning acoustic ballad ~softer & more halting than its grunge predecessor~ nestled in O’Connor’s fourth studio album Universal Mother. The song had a brief resurgence in 2019, when it appeared on the second episode of Big Little Lies’ second season, but the haunting cut has a deeper history. The track was released just months after the song’s composer, Kurt Cobain, died from a self-inflicted shotgun to the head. Releasing a version of the Nirvana song soon after Cobain’s suicide would have likely been a dicey idea at the time. The lyrics, brimming with self-loathing & regret, hold the aching story of a man who’s let down his family. The desperate war-cry foretells what would eventually unfold. In the wake of his death, to touch this sensitive landmine would be precarious, at best.
But O’Connor’s delicate take on “All Apologies” is spellbinding. Her hushed vocals coat the acoustic guitar in soft gauze until it barely registers. Spare, tender & stripped-down, the song's gentle delivery proved that she was a deserved emissary of Cobain's penned grief. To O'Connor, Cobain "represented a massive amount of people who were really kind of invisible & unheard, who had a lot of pa

Matchbox 20 ▿ 3am
The 1990s had a wide array of musical acts. The beginning of the decade saw the decline of hair bands & the entrance of grunge music, which would dominate until the mid-1990s. With the new millennium on the horizon, pop music was king. The Backstreet Boys, Britney Spears & NSYNC controlled the charts. But many of the most popular songs..songs that ruled the radio..had dark, somber stories behind them. Matchbox Twenty was all over the radio in the mid-1990s. Their songs were overplayed to the point of nausea at times. But while the band was mainstream darlings of radio, they also had a great talent in singer/songwriter Rob Thomas. His emotional deliveries, combined with touching lyrics, made for some superb performances. While “3am” was an uptempo song, a close listen to the lyrics reveals Thomas’s heartbreaking truth. He wrote the song about his mother’s battle with cancer when he was only a teenager. In an episode of VH1’s Storytellers, Thomas tells the audience no one really knew it was about his mother but instead thought it was about a lost love. Thomas described it as a “weird time” trying to care for himself & his mother & wondering why she was always tired & slept all the time. From VH1 Storytellers, here is "3am" by Matchbox 20.

On September 22, 1985, Neil Young, Willie Nelson & John Mellencamp hosted the first Farm Aid charity concert in Champaign, Illinois. By the mid-1990s, Farm Aid had become a perennial all-star live music event raising proceeds & awareness for family farmers. Farm Aid produced impressive lineups of musicians year after year, with Young, Nelson, Mellencamp & newest board members Dave Matthews & Margo Price, consistently participating in the charitable festivities. Young has not appeared in person at Farm Aid since 2019. The COVID-19 pandemic forced the event to go virtual in 2020, which saw Young join the livestream. However, the 77-year-old chose to sit out Farm Aid 2021 & Farm Aid 2022 out of concerns caused by the pandemic. Young has since waded back into public performing & hosted a pair of 50th-anniversary concerts at The Roxy in Los Angeles ahead of his Farm Aid appearance. Back on September 22, 1985, Young was backed by The International Harvesters, a group whose 10-piece lineup at the time consisted of bassist Joe Allen, acoustic guitarist Joel Bernstein, backing vocalist Matraca Berg, banjoist Larry Cragg, multi-instrumentalist Anthony Crawford, drummer Karl T. Himmel, pedal steel guitarist Ben Keith, pianist Hargus Pig Robbins, backing vocalist Tracy Nelson & fiddler Rufus Thibodeaux. Neil Young & The International Harvesters set at the first Farm Aid saw the crowd at the University Of Illinois’ Memorial Stadium treated to a short setlist consisting of an opening solo performance of “My My, Hey Hey (Out Of The Blue)” before full band takes on “Heart Of Gold” & “This Old House.” Country legend Waylon Jennings came out for the set closing “Get Back To The Country.” Young’s time onstage at the first Farm Aid also included a duet with Willie Nelson on “Are There Any More Real Cowboys?" Young will make his long-awaited return to the Farm Aid stage this Saturday, September 23 at Ruoff Music Center in Noblesville, Indiana. A free livestream wil
Today’s Tom Waits album Bone Machine is brought to you from a nightmare projected from a person screaming inside the bottom of a well. Even in 1992, the year in which Grunge would position itself as the gloomy voice of disinfected youth..giving these tales of mortality another edge by also giving the angle of mourning the mortal world, this ode to a place where “The dog is tied/ To a wagon of rain/ & the road is as wet as the sea,” though with these surrealist descriptions the truth of this place is definitely more one of self-truth (“& the places that I’m dreaming of/ Do they dream only of me?”). On the opposite end, “I Don’t Wanna Grow Up” is a song so punk that the Ramones covered it. This makes sense, since as the title suggests this is a song about maintaining youth (apt for an album so focused on death) & the simple chords really help give this song a propulsion more than most. After we get the only instrumental on the album, an outlandish piece called “Let Me Get Up on It” with completely indecipherable vocals that parade into the life of Bone Machine and fade out, the existential dread that the whole album has inhabited is confronted with its climax. “That Feel” as both vague & specific is appropriate a title, as it’s the one I presume that we all feel & yet is specific to all of us. That might explain why this emotional rock climax (helped as always by co-writer & inexplicable mortal being Keith Richards) is ended by a chorus of people; it is by everyone embracing everyone else’s inescapable & creeping “Feel” that is part of the journey of overcoming it in some way. Thus why an album so full of death & bleakness like Bone Machine can be left with a sense of freedom..It is another bizarre, abrasive yet inviting masterpiece from Tom Waits. Full of some of both the darkest & harshest material of his career & yet in turn some of the most emphatic & therapeutic. This is the biggest testament to Tom’s personality, one that five
On December 31, 1999, Celine Dion performed her very last show of the 20th century at the Molson Centre in Montreal, Quebec. This incredible concert event not only rung in the new millennium but it also marked the beginning of her sabbatical, during which she gave birth to René-Charles. Celine's return to the world of music came with 2002's release of 'A New Day Has Come.' A few anecdotes happened during this concert: A fan, maybe disappointed by her decision to take a two-years break & dedicate herself to her husband Rene Angelil, was mastered after having tried to clear a passage through the security barrier, a gun with electric trigger in his hand. The fanatic hurt 3 members of the security staff (now they are safe) & the police of Montreal admitted that if he had been able to reach the French Canadian star, it could have been tragic. Still during this concert, a dozen million televiewers believed in an effect of atmosphere when a smoke escaped from the bottom of the scene. Not at all! It was a footlight that suddenly caught fire! In a few seconds, while Celine was in full action, this beginning of fire was mastered by the security service apparently well-prepared for this kind of unforeseen occurrence. While the duet J'irai où tu iras with Luck Mervil was going full swing, Celine was dancing, running everywhere, as we are used to seeing her. Suddenly, her receiver microphone got loose from her dress & fell accidentally to the ground. Luck noticed it, let her know & as by magic a technician jumped up on stage & replaced the microphone. This made her forget her part "et ta langue d'ici". The same situation happened during the duet with Bryan Adams When You're Gone, but Celine did not lose her words. Let us imagine that the microphone broke..

Bruce Springsteen ~ Remember When The Music & Harry Chapin ~ Dancing Boy
Harry Chapin's music doesn't have much in common with Bruce Springsteen's, but his altruistic spirit helped open the latter's eyes to the importance of social activism. Chapin died July 16, 1981 at 38 years old after a car crash, but not before he'd become well-known for his tireless charitable efforts, particularly towards eradicating hunger. Springsteen has performed at multiple Harry Chapin tribute concerts. "Harry knew that it was going to take a lot more than just love to survive," Springsteen has said. "It was going to take a strong sense of purpose, of duty & a good clear eye on the dirty ways of the world." Springsteen has continued his friend's fight in charitable endeavors.
"Harry Chapin, a folk-rock composer & performer active in many charitable causes, was killed yesterday when the car he was driving was hit from behind by a tractor-trailer on the Long Island Expressway in Jericho, L.I., the police said. He was 38 years old..Detective Donald Wecklein said Mr. Chapin apparently died from the force of the crash..No charges were filed..Mr. Chapin organized & appeared in many benefit concerts for causes, including a campaign against world hunger, environmental & consumer issues & the Multiple Sclerosis Foundation. At one time, more than half his concerts were benefits. Raised Thousands for Arts..Recently he stood in the rain for half an hour at a large benefit at Caumsett State Park in Lloyd Harbor, greeted each car as it arrived. The benefit raised $200,000 for the arts foundation that allowed the bankrupt group to begin working on a fall season. He also helped persuade the New York State Council on the Arts to support the formation of the Long Island Philharmonic.."I think I've had the most social & political involvement of any singer-song writer in America,'' Mr. Chapin was quoted as having said..He also became involved with the theater. In 1975 he conceived a multimedia show entit

"Relive David Bowie & Annie Lennox's energetic rendition of Queen's 'Under Pressure' at The Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert for AIDS Awareness.
When David Bowie & Annie Lennox joined Queen members Brian May, Roger Taylor & John Deacon on stage, the audience knew magic was about to happen.
It was on April 20, 1992, when The Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert for AIDS Awareness took place at Wembley Stadium. The legendary music star had passed away in November the year before aged 45 due to complications from AIDS.
In celebration of his incredible life & legacy, some of the music industry's biggest names – & close friends of the late singer – sang at the benefit concert.
When Bowie & Lennox joined the rock band on stage, the audience of 72,000 people roared. But it was when the instantly-recognisable tune of 'Under Pressure' began to play that the crowd really went wild.. The incredible performance was broadcast live on television & radio to 76 countries around the world, with an audience of up to one billion people.
Profits raised from the concert were used to launch The Mercury Phoenix Trust, an AIDS charity organisation.
Behind-the-scenes footage from Lennox & Bowie's rehearsals shows their fun relationship as they smile & laugh while belting out the ballad.
At one point the camera cuts to George Michael, who can't help but sing along too.

Johnny Cash In His Final Performance At The Carter Family Fold in Hiltons, Va. On June 5, 2003: Cash, who strummed an acoustic during the set, was backed by bassist Bobby Starnes & a long-time collaborator, guitarist Jerry Hensley. He opened with "Folsom Prison Blues," "I Walk the Line" & a Kris Kristofferson cover, "Sunday Mornin' Comin' Down." Although his vocal tone was shaky, the performance itself was steely & Cash's guitar playing was typically resonant...June Carter Cash, who had passed away just weeks earlier, on May 15. Next, Cash performed a wrenching version of "Angel Band," a song he said his wife had asked Emmylou Harris to perform at her funeral. That was followed by two final songs, "Big River" & "Understand Your Man." Before the latter tune, Cash joked they were "making a lot of noise up here — especially Jerry, with his electric guitar." He then turned to the guitarist & reassured him, "It's okay, Jerry, don't worry — we're not going to throw you out. I won't let 'em." Cash then proceeded to tell a story about the first time he brought "electrical instruments" to the Carter Family Fold. His cousin, Janette Carter, got onstage & explained, "'Well, I know that we don't allow anybody to plug in when they're here, but June said that Johnny Cash was already plugged in when she met him.'" Then came "Understand Your Man," which Cash said hadn't been played in 25 years & a rousing standing ovation. After this performance, Cash recorded several more songs, including an original, "Like the 309," which surfaced on American V: A Hundred Highways. Cash died on Sept. 12, 2003, at the age of 71.

Raquel Welch & Cher
"The Cher Show" ˖ 1975
For over 50 years, the fashion designer Bob Mackie has worked tirelessly in service of glamour. As the costumer-in-residence for The Judy Garland Show, The Carol Burnett Show & perhaps most legendarily Cher, he pushed the boundaries of the censors & expanded America’s taste into glitzy zones traditionally off-limits to ready-to-wear designers. Although he’s been quite busy creating costumes for the Broadway arrival of The Cher Show, he took time out to leaf through the auction catalogue with Interview’s Mel Ottenberg & Thom Bettridge.

Mel Ottenburg: I’m so pissed I’m not in the market for any of these amazing looks from Cher because there are so many great items in the auction. I wonder if the Kardashians are going to buy everything, although some of these things are too colorful for them.
Bob Mackie: You know, they might buy them.
Ottenburg: They’re smart & they buy good stuff.
Thom Bettridge: Something incredible to think about when you look at these costumes is that they were all made for one-off occasions. Did you improvise a lot of your decisions?
Bob Mackie: It was such a panic to get Cher done every week. While I was doing that show, I was also doing The Carol Burnett Show in the next studio. We would start Monday like a race & by Friday night everything was over. I had the best time.
Mel Ottenburg: What lot were you on?
Mackie: The CBS lot on Fairfax & Beverly. That’s the first lot I ever worked on in television for The Judy Garland Show in 1963.
Ottenburg: I’m dying to know about this sketch in your auction of Judy & Liza. Something about that just reminded me of how wild your job must have been to fit these outfits & then wish for the best.

John Mayer灬If I Ever Get Around To Livin'灬Live On David Letterman灬August 19th 2013灬
"Heather Wines-"Live On Letterman/On the eve of the release of his new album, Paradise Valley, it was clear John Mayer was heading in a new direction. He no longer donned that wide-brimmed hat but instead embraced a headscarf. Questionable headwear choice maybe, but his fashion never outshines his music and besides a few thank you’s and a brief explanation of his new song “Dear Marie,” it was his music that was the main attraction.
“It’s weird to have a technology reference in a song. Everyone goes looking online for their first love...to see what they look like now,” he said of the new track. “We still look back and that’s what this song is about.”
Mayer headed to the Ed Sullivan Theater Monday night (Aug. 19) for a 70-minute Live on Letterman performance of material old and new. As he walked onto the famous stage in his blue jeans and peace-signed blue jacket, fans were greeted by the familiar chords of “Queen of California,” the opening track to his last release, 2012’s Born and Raised.
While he played several tracks off the new album, several songs from Born and Raised, Continuum fan favorite “Slow Dancing In a Burning Room” also appeared in the set. Having to cancel his 2012 Born and Raised Tour after being put on mandatory vocal rest due to granulomas in his throat, this was the first time many in attendance heard the songs live. Tracks like the bluesy “Something Like Olivia” showed off Mayer as a guitar virtuoso while “The Age of Worry,” also off Born and Raised, showcased the more country-leaning side of the singer with pedal steel and mandolin features."

Kevin Costner Says Whitney Houston Beat Michelle Pfeiffer, Julia Roberts For ‘The Bodyguard’ Because She Could Sing | “For me, it was so easy to go, ‘Well this is the most beautiful girl, this is the one who can sing’” the “Yellowstone” star said. “‘This is the girl.’” : Tess Patton : June 18, 2024
"Kevin Costner can’t imagine doing “The Bodyguard” with anyone other than Whitney Houston. Reflecting on his experience starring in and producing the 1992 romantic drama, the “Horizons” actor and filmmaker told Howard Stern Tuesday that Houston beat out the likes of Michelle Pfeiffer and Julia Roberts because she’s the one that could sing.
“It could’ve been Michelle Pfeiffer, it could’ve been Julia Roberts, it could’ve been anybody, but when I looked at it I thought, ‘No, it should be Whitney Houston,’” the “Yellowstone” star said on Stern’s SiriusXM show of the Grammy winner, who had at that point never acted in a film. “For me, it was so easy to go, ‘Well this is the most beautiful girl, this is the one who can sing. This is the girl.’”
Costner handpicked Houston and director Mick Jackson to lead the project. He took pride in guiding a young Houston on her first Hollywood set. “I said, ‘If you’re uncertain about things, Whitney, just look at me and tell me and we will drift off into the corner and I’ll make this right for you,’” Costner said of his relationship with the musician on set.
People were shocked by his decision to cast a green newcomer in the starring role in the film over Hollywood superstars, but Costner did not think it was “that big of a deal.” The studio wanted to go another way, putting forward stars with “better acting chops.”
“I like to think that that’s what it was,” Costner said of the studio’s reasons for not wanting to cast the young, Black rising star in an interview with CBS Sunday Mornings. “I didn’t see it as a risk at all. What I saw was that
