CLOSURES & DELAYS AS OF THURSDAY:
Columbus County Sheriff’s Office has announced it will postpone it’s ‘National Night Out’ event originally scheduled for August 6th to October 1st.

Columbus County Schools has postponed it’s ‘SEEKING INPUT ON NEW EAST END K-8 SCHOOL’ event originally scheduled for August 8th to an undecided date. Columbus Daily will provide the date once it’s released.

Whiteville Downtown has postponed it’s ‘Music on Madison’ event originally scheduled for August 8th to an undecided date. Columbus Daily will provide the date once it’s released.

Columbus Career and College Academy will dismiss classes early at 12:00 p.m. on Tuesday.

Lynn’s Place Restaurant of Lake Waccamaw will close through Friday.

West Columbus High Schools Senior Parent Meeting scheduled for August 8th will be rescheduled, TBA.

The Boys and Girls Home of Lake Waccamaw will close all offices for Wednesday and Thursday.

Columbus County DREAM Center will close from Wednesday to Friday.

Columbus County Animal Protective services will only answer to emergency calls.

Southeastern Community College closed Wednesday and Thursday.

Columbus County Government offices will be closed Thursday.

St. Paul Food Bank will be closed Thursday.

* At 723 PM EDT, a severe thunderstorm capable of producing a tornado
was located over Riegelwood, or 12 miles northwest of Leland,
moving northwest at 25 mph.

HAZARD...Tornado.

SOURCE...Radar indicated rotation.

IMPACT...Flying debris will be dangerous to those caught without
shelter. Mobile homes will be damaged or destroyed.
Damage to roofs, windows, and vehicles will occur. Tree
damage is likely.

Columbus County declared a State of Emergency. Columbus County’s Emergency Operations Center will be partially activated by 12 PM tomorrow (8/7/24) and then fully activated by 7 PM (8/7/24). Columbus County offices will also be closed beginning at 1 PM tomorrow (8/7/24). Further updates about closures will be included in the next release.

Four shelter locations will be open to the public at 3 PM tomorrow (8/7/24):
• Edgewood Elementary School (Pet friendly) – 317 E Calhoun St, Whiteville, NC 28472
• West Columbus High School – 7294 Andrew Jackson Hwy SW, Cerro Gordo, NC 28430
• South Columbus High School – 40 Stallion Dr, Tabor City, NC 28463
• East Columbus Jr./Sr. High School – 32 Gator Ln, Lake Waccamaw, NC 28450
*Please remember to bring medicines, oxygen, or any other essential items that you may need while at the shelter.

If you live in a flood prone area or an area that has flooded in the past, please make plans for sheltering in place or evacuating before the storm arrives.

Emergency Services will operate until 40 mph sustained winds. For all non-emergency storm related issues or questions please call the Columbus County Emergency Operations Center Storm Line at 910-640-2208 – this line will be activate starting at 12 PM tomorrow (8/7/24). In the event of an emergency, please call 911.
