Conrad Press World's Finest Printmaking Presses since 1956! www.conradmachine.com Dear Printmaker,

Welcome to the official Conrad Machine Fan Page. Conrad Machine Co.

This year is a historic year in Conrad Machine's history; it marks our 66-year anniversary. was founded by my father and uncle, Earl and Robert Conrad, in 1945 with assistance from my grandfather, Hveding Conrad. Fresh out of WWII, my father and uncle started the company with little more than ideals and the American dream. In 1956, we began manufacturing our first printmaking presses. Today, we ar

e recognized around the world as one of the oldest manufacturers of fine art printmaking presses as well as the oldest manufacturer in North America. is proud to manufacture 6 different lines of presses. We do not, by and large, sell peripheral materials like other companies. Instead, we concentrate our time, energy, and engineering abilities on manufacturing the world's finest printmaking presses. We offer more lines of presses than any other press company. Our selection allows you to pick the press that best fits your wants, needs, and price range. The Conrad Machine Co. line of presses includes tabletop and floor model etching, combination, monotype, and lithography presses. These presses have proven to be popular in both the studio and educational settings. In addition to our Conrad Machine Co. press line, we have added the world-renowned American French Tool press line in 1999. Andre Beaudoin, American French Tool's founder, designed and built these elegant and graceful etching presses for nearly 30 years in Coventry, Rhode Island. Their agile design and stunning performance are unsurpassed in the printmaking industry. Recently, in 2007, we added the complete line of Rembrandt fine art presses. This line, designed by John Graves, has proven itself over the past 35 years, with its efficient and well-built design, to be very popular among printmakers. Our newest line of presses is the Brand New line. This line is designed after the Charles Brand style of presses. If you loved Charles Brand presses, you will love the Brand New line. Conrad Machine Warranty Logo Conrad Machine Co. is not only celebrating our 66-year anniversary, we are also celebrating more than 50 years of building the finest printmaking presses in the world. Because of our level of commitment to higher quality and better performance, we have decided to increase our press warranty. All Conrad Machine Co. manufactured presses now carry a 25-year warranty. This warranty sets a benchmark; no other press manufacturer offers a better, full 25-year warranty on their printmaking presses. We invite you to compare our presses to any in the world. We are confident you will see that our commitment to quality, large variety, and you, the printmaker, is unmatched. This last weekend, we had the privilege to meet up with Lyell Castonguay before one of his BIG INK workshops in Detroit.

We haven’t seen the Big Tuna in person since we built this massive Conrad 48 inch wide Monotype press back in 2016.

Awesome to see Lyell and the press still going strong after almost 10 years traveling the country nonstop from state to state, workshop to workshop.

Hope to see you in Michigan again soon!

First time printmaker!

It was a privilege helping James pull his very first woodcut print at the SGCI show this month! It’s so fun introducing new people to the printmaking process and getting them to experience it first hand.

Installing a new 30’’ x 52’’ motorized American French Tool press at Two Palms Press in New York City.

The studio printmakers wanted to increase their printing capabilities and switched from a manual press to a motorized press.

Now, the studio has two motorized AFT presses: a 30’’ wide machine and a 44’’ wide machine.

We will be rebuilding and restoring the original 30 x 52 press. If you are interested in getting a discounted, used floor model press, send us a DM.

Removing this vintage manual American French Tool Press in to make way for a brand new motorized AFT.

The printmakers at Two Palms Press in New York wanted to increase their printing capabilities and decided to upgrade to a new motorized press.

The new press will now complement their larger 44 inch motorized American French Tool Press. What a great studio space!

We will be rebuilding and restoring this 30 x 52 AFT. If you are interested in getting this used press, send us a DM.

Another vintage American French Tool upgrade. This time for our friends in Berkeley at the Kala Art Institute. This is the first of three American French Tool presses that will be getting a compete pressure system retrofit kit in their studio.

As many of you may know, all vintage AFT’s came with a sundial gauge, which was not the best system for setting your pressure accurately. When we acquired the company from the founder, Andre Beaudoin, in the late 1990s, we redesigned the AFT pressure system to accept our more modern floor model micrometer gauges. These gauges allow for easy and accurate pressure settings as precise as .001”, the finest and most precise resolution in all of printmaking!

If you have a vintage AFT and you’d like upgraded micrometer gauges, don’t settle for anything less than genuine American French Tool parts by Conrad.

Send us a DM and we can get you set up.

Some in-studio shots of a new E-24 Etching Press with 24x48 press bed, micrometer gauges, open-spoke starwheel, stand, and casters.

All Conrad E-24 presses come with our proprietary 6:1 planetary gearbox to make printing smooth and effortless, even under the heaviest of pressures—and this particular artist wanted the smoothest possible printing experience, opting for an open-spoked starwheel to replace the standard hand crank.

A beautiful press for a beautiful home studio. Happy printing!

A few before/after shots of one of our recent Charles Brand press restorations.

This wasn’t the worse press we have seen come through for a restoration, but it had seen better days. The top straps on the press were bent. It was missing its pressure screws and microgauges. There was a fair amount of rust on the rollers, especially on the inside welds and shafts.

For this project, we completely disassembled the entire press piece by piece, sandblasted, and repainted all the parts. We straightened out the bent top straps, returned and polished the upper and lower rolls, as well as reconditioned the bedplate. We checked every bearing on the press to make sure it turned freely and had no drag or wear spots—replaced if necessary—then re-lubed and re-greased everything.

Last but not least, we fitted the press with modern Conrad floor model microgauges, installed a registration grid and lexan bed cover, and fitted the press for casters so it can be easily moved around the studio.

A lot of work to put into a restoration , but the results speak for themselves. This press came out beautifully!

Perspective piece. Here are two American French Tool etching presses. The smaller of the two is 36'' x 60'', which is a very good sized floor model etching press. The larger press, at 52'' x 96'', is almost as wide as the other press is long. Now that is one gigantic press.

Nearing 4,000 pounds, the larger press was crated and shipped all the way to Australia and is now the largest American French Tool in the entire eastern hemisphere.

Love printmaking, but don’t have the room?

As printmakers, we always seem to be at a loss for space, and sometimes our equipment doesn’t make it easy on us.

Here is a wonderful example of what’s possible with a Conrad E-15 Tabletop Press. Luke Roswold recently sent us a few pictures of the printmaking corner in his studio apartment. What a beautiful setup—and an excellent use of space! You don’t need a dedicated art studio to get started in printmaking.

He also sent us two of the first prints pulled on his new press, monotypes inspired by nature.

The first is a leaf that has been eaten away, having only the interior lace left. The second, titled “Eagle Feather” was at auction earlier this year.

Excited to add this vintage Chandler & Price paper cutter, circa 1909, to our in-house printmaking studio!

It’s in great mechanical condition, but we will also be doing a full cosmetic restoration, so it looks just as it did when it was new. Every rebuild and restoration we complete is such a rewarding project because we get to breathe new life into these machines, all of which have their own unique history and story.

Will post pictures of the restoration process!

We recently made the trip down to central Ohio to pick up a large batch of new and used litho stones—over 3,000 pounds of stones!

It definitely took some work to haul all of these out of the second story industrial studio building they were housed in.

Some large, some small, all varied sizes and mostly light and dark gray.

Let us know if you’re looking for any litho stones. We have plenty!!

This specific press bed is for a large American French Tool Etching Press and is made from precision ground, aircraft-grade aluminum and weighs just under 600 pounds. At 52’’ wide x 96’’ long, it is absolutely massive!

A few pictures from our recent press relocation at Elgin Community College, outside of Chicago.

We spent the afternoon moving their large Conrad E-40 Floor Model Etching Press (2,500 pounds!) into its new studio space one floor up.

The building is in the middle of a complete renovation, and the printmaking studio got a major upgrade. The new studio has lots of windows and great natural light. A beautiful spot!

Congratulations to fellow Midwestern printmaker Leslie Worth, who recently started her own printmaking studio and micro-gallery in Stevens Point, Wisconsin! A beautiful location!

The studio is a printmaking workspace with demos and workshops in relief, letterpress, intaglio, gelatin monotype, paper plate lithography, and monotype printmaking—as well as featuring a micro-gallery of hand-crafted artwork!

Leslie will be teaching demos and workshops on her new Conrad E-18 Etching Press, which takes center stage in the studio’s front window!

Congratulations and best of luck on the new space, Leslie!

We offer enclosed wheels like this one on all of our presses, all the way from our small tabletops to our large floor models.
