Contributing to the community seems to come naturally to Aavarika Niroula, a senior at Lebanon High School and recipient of the 2023-2024 Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) Good Citizens Award. But Niroula’s path to community service has been markedly different from the average American high school student.

Change often happens quickly and sometimes unexpectedly, and in an instant, life can get turned upside down. This is one notion that speaks to the story behind a Lebanon-based nonprofit organization, Unmask the Invisible, co-founded by Lebanon residents Amy and Steven Longmoore, that illuminates the invisibilities of traumatic brain injury (TBI) and brings hope and support to those who are affected by it.

Nestled at the southern end of the Route 12A commercial corridor – past the Best Buy, Walmart, and Applebees, and tucked behind the Home Depot parking lot – comes something of a surprise, if you haven’t been. The destination in question is the Fore-U Golf Center: an all-ages “oasis” that boasts a double-decker driving range, mini-golf course, batting cages, and ice cream – a local business shaped by economics, family ties, and an impressive level of community engagement.

Taking a risk and having the courage to share a talent in front of others is one valuable decision that 11-year-old Carter Moote made when she decided to start singing the responsorial psalms at Sacred Heart Church during Sunday services. Carter, a Lebanon resident and Lebanon Middle School student, took the leap when Sacred Heart’s music director, Alice Maleski, asked her if she’d be willing to sing for the congregation.

It’s hard to miss the attention being given these days to the overwhelming problem of single use and disposable plastic waste and pollution. More and more, research is demonstrating not only the harmful effects of the processes and chemicals used in giving plastic its useful properties, but also the incredible volume of plastic waste accumulating around the world.

You can find maple syrup in every city, town, and rest stop in New England, and in every grocery store and gift shop from Connecticut to Maine. Whether you buy it in the familiar, screw-capped, gray plastic jugs or in fancy glass bottles shaped like little leaves, maple syrup carries with it a long tradition of community, family, and hard work. Nowhere is that more true than in Lebanon, where some of the oldest families in town are not only continuing the long legacy of maple sugaring, but carrying it forward into a more efficient – and more sustainable – future.

Those of us who have ever played sports in high school remember our favorite coaches fondly. At the time they may have seemed too tough, too regimented, or too discipline-oriented, but after some time, we realized the lessons that they taught us were important in negotiating the real world in which we later found ourselves. Those lessons of teamwork, giving it your all, carrying through till the finish, and practice till you get it right are not just applicable to sports, but to almost every aspect of life.

For the players on the Lebanon High School (LHS) Boys Hockey Team, they now have a new coach from whom they’ll learn both the intricacies of the sport and the life lessons of participating on a team...

The childcare shortage in the Upper Valley has become an increasingly pressing and widely felt issue over the past several years, affecting not just families with children, but whole communities. As long as humans have roamed the earth, we’ve been coming together around common interests. We’ve formed groups of all kinds – tribes, guilds, coalitions, communities, associations, and clubs, to name a few. At last count, the online database – Cause IQ – listed almost 32,000 community service clubs and organizations in the United States. This year, the Rotary Club of Lebanon is celebrating 100 years of community service, as it steadfastly maintains the Rotary tradition of “Service Above Self” while continuing to find ways to adapt to our changing times.

In 2008, Paul Coats discovered a trail running race in Newport, NH that caught his attention. The longtime director of the Lebanon Recreation, Arts, and Parks Department – and a serious runner himself – Coats knew competitive athletes expect professional timing and precise distance measurements. These quality characteristics found at the Newport Recreation trail race were usually reserved for events abutting metropolitan areas. In a few short years, a wide-ranging host of trail and road running events for all ages and abilities would be brought to the Upper Valley, in large part thanks to Lebanon Recreation, Arts, and Parks.

Both Cioffredi & Associates and Lucky’s Coffee Garage give generously – in time and money – to local community organizations. However, if there’s one thing that unites these two companies in our first “Business as a Force for Good” segment, it’s the way they care for and invest in their teams of employees. Whatever’s on the menu – whether it’s coffee or physical therapy and wellness – the values and cultures developed within their respective businesses ripple outward, making a positive impact on the communities they serve.

It’s easy to imagine a time when silver, streamlined diners speckled the granite landscape – but it seems only a few of these American relics remain open in Vermont and New Hampshire today. It’s one reason why there’s been so much buzz around the “For Sale” sign outside the Four Aces Diner in West Lebanon. The question on everyone’s mind seems to be: will it remain open? And, if so, will it stay the same diner we know and love?

When career educators Jennifer and Carl Chambers first met in New York City twenty years ago, they shared a passion for an experiential style of teaching and for life’s great adventures. These mutual interests eventually led to their marriage and a move to the Upper Valley to continue their teaching careers in both public and private school settings – Jennifer in music and Carl in English and administration. Now the couple is dedicating themselves to an exciting new venture – realizing their dream of opening their own school on the mall in Lebanon this fall.

Each year, drug and alcohol problems among employees result in the loss of productivity, profits, and a positive working environment for businesses and organizations. In the past, employees dealing with these issues might incur severe consequences from their employers, frequently resulting in termination, which often led to a further downhill spiral in their lives. However, in recent years, many forward-thinking companies and organizations are trying different approaches to support employees facing addiction problems...
