Keynote by Margaret Timoney, '89 '92 MBA
"Its about meeting people, in person, looking them in the eye, networking, talking, listening"
That was Margaret Timoney CEO of Heineken USA in graduation address at her Alma Mater Iona University in New Rochelle, NY Friday.
The native of County Mayo, #ireland described arriving at Iona as a freshman basketball player in 1985 and being made to feel welcomed. She starred on the women's basketball team scoring 1,894 points a program record at the time and later was enrolled in the school's Athletic Hall of Fame.
Ms. Timoney went on to earn an MBA from Iona before embarking on a 25 year career at The HEINEKEN Company holding positions in both Europe and the U.S. She highlighted several points:
- Being Yourself
- Building your drive,
- Realizing Life is a Contact Sport
- Being Present, avoiding distractions
- Knowing five people you could trust to be with on a small boat
Ms. Timoney was awarded a Doctor of Business Administration Degree

Temptation to give attention to digital screens and not to the person in front of us is a challenge we all face"
That was Dr. Seamus Carey President of Iona University in remarks at the school's 79th #commencement Friday morning in New Rochelle, and the first as a #university.
Dr. Carey recognized the 850 new graduates as,
"Not only able to collect data, but to decifer its meaning",
noting,
"We live in an attention economy with companies like Google, Meta and Tick Tock designing algorithms to hold our attention".
He concluded expressing concern about #generativeai, describing that it,
"Makes it harder to know what is true, and where our information is coming from".

Enjoyed talk with Walter Clayton, Nelly Junior Joseph, and Daniss Jenkins from the 2023 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Champion Iona Gaels at the 2023 Met Basketball Writers Dinner in Tarrytown, NY.
All three of these players grew tremendously during their years in New Rochelle at Iona.
A sophomore guard, Walter Clayton from Lake Wales, Florida was the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Player of the Year averaged 16.8 pts per game, made 43% of three point attempts, and made 95.3% of his Free Throw attempts
Walter was named to the 1st Team All Met Basketball team. In fall he will attend the University of Florida and play for the Florida Gators
Nelly Junior Joseph as a junior center averaged 14.9 points per game, 9.3 rebounds per game, and 52 blocks for the season.
Nelly was named to the All Met Second Team. The native of Benin City, Nigeria will enroll at the University of New Mexico next year and play for the New Mexico Lobos and coach Rick Pitino Jr.
Junior guard Daniss Jenkins played in all 35 Iona games averaged 15.6 points per game, led team with 173 assists, was named to the second team All Met Basketball team.
Daniss will follow Coach Rick Pitnio to Queens and enroll for next season at St. John's University.
