β‘οΈ Lighting Breakdown β‘οΈ
This scene was intense to light because there were a lot of things happening and a lot of talent in each shot. We needed to give a cool, blue moonlight feel coming in from the outside while keeping the interior warm with tungsten lighting.
The main key light was an Aputure 120dII with a lantern and skirt and we had to Jerry rig a CTO gel inside the lantern to gel it which was pretty difficult to do, but we managed to pull it off. This was being held above the kitchen table via an Impact boom arm on a combo stand out of frame.
The exterior lights were 600D pros with CTB gels on the reflector dishes, pointing in through the outside windows and doors to give the moonlight effect. To make sure the kitchen splash had Moonlight coming through, we used an Aputure 300dII also with a CTB gel attached to the reflector and a Nanlite tube inside placed vertically next to the sink.
The rest of the interior was supplemented with Nanlite Pavotubes 30xII scattered throughout the kitchen and dining area. We used an Aputure 300X coming through the kitchen door set to tungsten and there were also a few practicals on either side of the fireplace in the living room. We also used an Aputure MC light to illuminate one of the plants that was behind one of the talent (also set to tungsten 3200K).
All shots in the kitchen scene needed soft blue and orange lighting to provide good, cinematic color contrast for whatever shot we needed. Throw in some fog, direct the kids, and we were ready to shoot.
The whole scene took about two hours to get completed, and it definitely took maximum effort by all cast and crew members to make it work.
It may have been stressful on set during these two hours, but everything came out looking super awesome and I think we nailed it.
