We had a great session recording some original music with and his new band last week! Featuring on drums and .blanton on bass, this fantastic new trio recorded four songs with us during their session last Monday. The band & the tunes were sounding absolutely fantastic, and we can’t wait to hear more!

We ended our year by celebrating the 2024 Winter Solstice in Studio W with Steven Rhoden for his Concert of Love & Rock! 🎸 We had a full crew with Big Rob and Kaylie on audio, Don on lighting and projection with custom, solstice-inspired visuals by Jacob! It was a night to remember celebrating music and the magic of the season!

Right! A Hammond, Leslie, and one Colorado Sound engineer 🏝️

Here at Colorado Sound Studios, the sonic possibilities are endless with our collection of Hammond organs (B3, C3, A100) and six Leslie speaker cabinets! Featuring a rotating horn and bass rotor, Leslie speakers enhance the organ’s tone by producing a Doppler effect, giving the organ’s sound dimension and movement. This musical combo has been used by countless musicians since the 1940’s, including artists such as Lettuce, the Motet, and the Steve Miller Band at Colorado Sound.

The Hammond B3 is an electric organ first manufactured in 1935, using sliding drawbars to create a variety of sounds. Operationally identical to the B3, the C3 model is significantly heavier, featuring a more extensive wooden frame and popular in churches around the world. The A100 is a more compact model that features built-in speakers, reverb, and a wider selection of wood finishes. The A100 is often considered the ‘home’ version of the B3/C3 organs.

We had a great session last week for Timm Duffy recording some of his original music with an absolutely killer all-star band! The recordings featured Larry Thompson on Drums, Kent McLagan on Upright Bass (that he made himself), Randy Chavez playing guitar, and Jon Wirtz on Rhodes! Also in the room was legendary producer and vocalist Mark Oblinger. It was a great session, we got some great tones & the tracks are sounding fantastic. Every session needs a good reverb! We have a few hardware reverbs in our studio A that get used on almost every session - one of these is our EMT 140 Plate reverb!

Reverb is an essential tool when recording because it helps emulate the sound of a space - like a large room or concert hall. In the early days of recording, engineers used empty concrete rooms called echo rooms to help them add space to their recordings - However, echo rooms were difficult and expensive to build, and the reverbs themselves weren’t very customizable, as they were completely dependent on the space itself.

Plate reverbs were introduced In 1957 by German company Elektro-Mess-Technik (or EMT). Their first plate reverb model, the EMT 140 reverb unit, revolutionized mechanical reverb. Instead of using a physical space to create the sound of reverb, Plate reverbs send audio signal through a large suspended metal plate, resulting in a lush reverb sound that’s similar to the sound of a large hall.

Our EMT 140 is setup with a single mono input and returns in stereo, making it great for any mono sound source that needs some width - we typically have ours set up with a long decay and a huge, rich sound, but we can adjust the decay time anywhere between 1 and 4 seconds using the mechanical k**b on top. We love using it on Strings, Horns, or Vocals, but it sounds great on stereo sources too, like our Yamaha C7 Grand Piano.

These days, you can find a plugin emulation online for almost every piece of gear - however we’ve found that plate reverb emulations don’t even come close to the lush, warm sound that we can get from our real EMT.

For many years, has been a staple in our studio when it comes to getting the cleanest, purest signal possible. Today we want to talk about our Grace m802 preamps that we use with our flight pack (which is what we take to record symphonies, to Red Rocks, or any mobile recording) and in all of our studios.
These preamps have been on the road, at Red Rocks, outside, reorganized, and used in all of our studios for over a decade and they still prove to be reliable and pure. Their adaptability to any setup, whether that be on stage or in the studio, is an absolute necessity for delivering the highest quality recordings for all of our clients. Our 40 channels of m802 preamps are remote controlled up to a thousand feet away with 48v, phase, ribbon mode, and gain. These preamps can also be controlled by Digidesign and ProTools|HD systems and MIDI controllers.
Something that we also feel is worth mentioning is the top quality customer service. Every time we have needed help with something related to any grace products we have purchased, there has always been a wonderful team ready to answer questions and help take care of the problem.
We cannot speak highly enough about the work puts into their products in general, but especially their preamps. We have many new records on the way and we intend to use these preamps until the sun explodes!

We’ve been having a lot of fun recording voice overs for in Studio A! Working with voice actor Ryan Reynolds & the incredible Crunchyroll production staff, our Engineer Don has been recording english dubs for two Anime Series, “Masamune-kun’s” and “Spice & Wolf”
The setup in the booth utilizes a laptop to display the script, a TV with the Anime displayed, and a Neumann U87 to capture the voice! These sessions have been a lot of fun, and we can’t wait to work with Crunchyroll again soon!

Colorado Sound Studios had the pleasure of hosting an incredible team of music professionals last week in our Studio A. Chief engineer and producer David Baron, along with his assistant engineer Renée Hikari, joined forces with renowned singer-songwriter David Kushner and Wesley Schultz of The Lumineers to create some new and exciting music. Steve Avedis, our talented studio engineer, was thrilled to work with such an amazing team.
