Mercedes Moebuis, president of the Republican Club of Carroll County, is now one of nine members of Carroll County’s Republican Central Committee, the result of a decision made by Committee chair Joe Leeman on Monday.
Leeman’s decision comes after multiple rounds of voting last Tuesday by the entire Committee failed to produce the five votes necessary to induct a new member, leaving the decision with Leeman per MDGOP bylaws.
During those rounds of voting last week, Bryan Thompson, former chair of Concerned Parents of Carroll County, was the leading vote getter, followed by Moebuis, then Bob Kurland.
A spot on the Committee opened up after Jay Sivigny, husband to Board of Education member Donna Sivigny, stepped down from the administrative body because he is no longer a Carroll County resident.
Remarking on last Tuesday’s meeting, Committee member Katherine Adelaide called into the Board of County Commissioners meeting on Thursday, and said there was a “robust debate” though a decision on who to add was unable to be made.
In June of this year, after Deb Thomas stepped down as a Committee member, Sam Jones, legislative aide to Senator Justin Ready, was voted onto the body by the remaining members.
Other candidates considered at that time were Thompson, Al Grasley, a Sykesville Town Council member, Ray Fava, a former District 1 Commissioner candidate, Robin Frazier, a former District 1 Commissioner, and Rod Harrison.

Moebuis will be sworn into office by Leeman on Tuesday during a monthly Republican Club of Carroll County meeting.
The mission of Carroll’s Republican Central Committee is to “support Republican candidates for elective office and promote the Republican Party in Carroll County,” according to the body’s website.
