Garage Mahal Recording Studio

Garage Mahal Recording Studio Exciting records are made under exciting circumstances. I serve as Recording Engineer and Music Producer.

Garage Mahal Recording is a full service audio and music recording studio in the Portland-Westbrook Maine area. We pride ourselves in helping our clients realize their artistic vision in a flexible and familiar recording environment, using both modern technology & old school recording techniques. http://www.garagemahalrecording.com

Our studio was designed to provide a flexible & familiar environm

ent, with a 330 sq ft main tracking room large enough to be comfortable while maintaining intimacy. Two booths accommodate anything from a guitar amp or solo vocalist to a small drum kit or horn section. All rooms are constructed with Owens-Corning sound rated materials, floating floors for acoustic isolation, and are wired together, providing maximum flexibility for whatever setup the client wants. Garage Mahal Recording embraces both new technology and old school recording techniques. A great recording starts with a great performance, and our Hearback cueing system provides the client with complete hands-on control over their own personal headphone mix. A solid and growing collection of microphones capture the sounds. Recording digitally on a computer (or DAW) keeps costs low and provides a flexibility unheard of in the analog days.

Back in my New York days I saw this man perform a lot. Mark Horn was the drummer for the Blue Chieftains, a really great Alt-Country band that played the east village in NYC very often. Sometimes they would play three sets, three nights in a row. I absolutely loved them. Imagine my surprise when Mark, who I had never been formally introduced to, called me to record his trio at Garage Mahal Recording Studio. Like me he lives in Maine now but had recorded at Coyote Studios in Brooklyn where I worked THIRTY YEARS AGO. Small world, right?

Yesterday at Garage Mahal Recording I had the pleasure of recording Mark Horn (banjo/vocals), Doug Moier (guitar), Andy Buckland (standup bass) and Karen Grimshaw (vocals). I think the best description of their music is “old timey”. They played and sang great, just a pleasure to listen to even though technically I was working.

Today, this man dug deep and laid down excellent bass tracks with a Carol Kaye/James Jameson vibe. It’s said (and I firmly believe) that you can hum a good bass line. Thanks to Bernie Tajonera of COSMIC for a great afternoon of music. Cosmic guitarist Bill Bourassa will be in tomorrow to record overdubs. Looking forward to it.

Another piece from the Garage Mahal Recording Studio guitar amp collection: the Ampeg V4. The legendary Ken Fischer of Trainwreck Circuits turned me on to this amp (I believe he helped develop it when he worked at Ampeg). It’s the amp you here on “Get Your Ya-Yas Out” by The Rolling Stones. Sounds awesome but it weights a TON. Good for the studio but gigging with it requires a road crew.

Mainebrews N Musicreviews is a great resource for learning about new Maine-based music. I recently designed the logo for their TOP 10 list, and I think it came out pretty snappy!

Thanks to Rowan Bishop at Bridge Street Design for the cool new logo!

Over the weekend the Galilee Guys were here at Garage Mahal Recording Studio to lay down tracks for their next single, a rock arrangement of the "Star Spangled Banner". As a result, I've been feeling quite patriotic all week. Special thanks to Ronnie Lee for some tech work on the drum kit.

I got a nice shout-out from Mainebrews N Musicreviews for my work on the new COSMIC cd. Thanks Paul Gauer!

Mixes for the new AfterBlack release (recorded and mixed here at Garage Mahal Recording) are completed and the band is thrilled. I must admit I'm digging them myself. Here's a taste!

The Garage Mahal Recording Studio gear arsenal now includes a Vox AC30 guitar amplifier. Made famous by the Beatles, they are used by a host of artists from the late Tom Petty to Brian May of Queen. All you players out there know this is a serious jangle machine and an important addition to the collection.

After tracking guitar, bass and drums live on the floor yesterday, 3/4 of Afterblack were back at Garage Mahal Recording Studio today for guitar overdubs. Songs are really shaping up nicely. Tomorrow we tackle vocals.

Garage Mahal Recording Studio alumni Afterblack are active again (yay!) and recording their next release here at the studio. Today was setup day and we’re getting a thunderous drum sound.

Reflections, the new cd by Rachel Rivera, Sound Healer is back from manufacturing. I have the honor and privilege of recording and mixing it (here at Garage Mahal Recording Studio), as well as designing the packaging (at Bridge Street Design). Rachel is obviously thrilled with the final product!
