Bensouda Files Defamation Suit Against Kurang

Senior lawyer and former lead counsel of the Janneh Commission, Amie Bensouda through Antouman AB Gaye and Co., on behalf of Bensouda, has today filed a defamation lawsuit against Alhaji Mamadi Kurang before Justice Coker at the Bakau High Court, seeking millions in damages.

The legal action follows a cease and desist notice served to Kurang, former executive secretary of the Janneh Commission, a few months back.

The cease and desist letter demanded that Kurang retract alleged defamatory statements made against Bensouda concerning her work with the commission, or face a D144 million lawsuit.

According to Bensouda's legal team, Kurang's comments on social media and other platforms had the potential to harm her "good national and international reputation."

The letter from Bensouda's counsel demanded that Kurang immediately cease from further defamatory statements, permanently remove existing ones from public platforms, and publish a full and unequivocal retraction and apology within seven days. Failure to comply, the letter warned, would result in legal proceedings seeking injunctive relief, general damages, and aggravated damages for defamation and malicious falsehood.

Kurang fires back with a D200M counter-suit and not only counters Bensouda's legal threat but has also threatened a defamation lawsuit.

Represented by AJ Njie & Associates, Kurang seek a public apology and D200 million from Ms. Combeh Gaye of Antouman A.B. Gaye & Co. Law Chambers, citing alleged defamatory statements made against him on May 16, 2025, in the "Cease and Desist Notice Re: Defamatory Statements Regarding Mrs Amie N.D. Bensouda."

Kurang vehemently denies the allegations, asserting that his statements were an exercise of his free speech rights on matters of public interest. His legal team argues that Bensouda, in her capacity with the Janneh Commission, acted as a public officer, thereby subjecting her to public scrutiny.

Kurang, who served as Secretary to the commission tasked with investigating former President Yahya A.J.J. Jammeh's financial dealings, maintains that his criticisms of the commission's actions were fact-based and aimed at promoting accountability.

Furthermore, Kurang's lawyer stated that the document served to Kurang by Ms. Gaye's firm falsely described him as a "fraud," causing him significant personal and professional harm. Kurang's team has demanded a formal retraction and an apology, warning that legal action will follow within 14 days if his requests are not met.

Today, Amie Bensouda's legal team has officially filed their defamation suit before Justice Coker of the Bakau High Court. When contacted, Kurang's lawyer confirmed that they have yet to receive the official court process.

Lawyer Darboe needs to shut up with his fake morality talk.If we’re talking about hypocrisy, then Darboe is the poster boy of it.

Let’s break it down:

1) He once bragged about making the country ungovernable — now he talks about peace? 🤡

2) He threatened teachers for standing up for their rights.

3) He told us “Barrow is our Barrow, come rain or sunshine”—then turned around and called him a dictator.

4) He shamelessly called 2026 a “do or dìe” election . Pure incitement.

5) He AMENDED the age limit just to keep his dying dream alive.

6) He FIRED a Foni-born soldier just because he’s from the same region as Salif Sarjo. Pure tribal bigotry.

So Gambians, let me ask you: Who is the real threat to this country? Who is the real hypocrite that should be held accountable? It’s not just double standards—it’s Darboe’s entire personality.🇬🇲 Wake up before the UDP cult drags this country into chaos.
