Questions in keeping the house warm in winter!

We bought a 1899 old farm house in January of this year. The house has an old oil boiler in the basement which is a dirt floor and stone walls.

Last winter for the part we were here it was freezing. The temp inside QUICKLY dropped and we burned through oil like crazy. We put a wood burning stove in this fall and yes while it is helping the house is large and it still gets cold QUICKLY. Upstairs is one thing but I’m trying to figure out how to keep heat from escaping downstairs.

The windows seem to be good. Not much cold air coming from them if any. i think it’s coming from the basement from these massive air vents we have and air returns we have. How does everyone with these massive air vents keep their houses warm? Can I cover the return air vents? What are they even for? When I try to find breezes or cold spots in the house it’s always by a vent. Some of the vents are newer and. An be closed but these older ones can’t.

My thought is we need to insulate the basement…but that’s going to be a A big project it’s very large….is there anything else I can do? We are in NY State and it’s cold!

Looking for opinions. I have no choice but to replace my current flooring and picked out floors that I like (not keeping my cabinets in mind). I obviously want it to flow nicely and also want to love the floor I pick!

I wish I had larger samples of the two smallest, I need help deciding!

This wallpaper is a look… we want to remove it but maxed out the budget redoing the kitchen. It’s the whole entryway, up the staircase, and down the upstairs hallway. Any suggestions on making this work? Ignore the red couch, that’s gone lol *and the gross carpets have been cleaned but do plan on removing them! ***no wood under carpets 😞😞

Help!
I’m picking new tile and picked the style, but can’t decide on polished or matte. Both are rated the same friction/slippage rate so not worried about slippage. This bathroom gets tons of natural light.
I was going to go with matte with floor but how does matte do for shower walls?

Looking for some help/recommendations on how to better insulate this attic opening. I have 2” ISO I can put over the opening. How do I make it so it’s removable? Velcro strips? It’s in a closet so don’t really care if it’s “pretty”

How could anyone NOT want a golden dorito?! 🤣

It caught my eye yesterday and I left it there, but over night it was all I could think about, so I raced back this morning to pick it up!

A 1950s home and I’m trying my best to work with this original tile. I just put up this wallpaper. Is there a way to cover/paint the tile floor on a budget? I’m wondering if that will make it look better? Thank you for your advice/ideas!!!

I really need some advice. Complete gut of our bathroom begins 1/6. I have no vision. Our house is a 1921 farmhouse (former dairy farm). My husband and I had been doing the work on our own, but he passed last year and now I have to hire out. And now that I can’t bounce ideas off of him, and my five year old is very little help, I need other old home loving adults ideas and opinions. I’ve ordered a small clawfoot tub, enclosure, I’ve picked the toilet, we’re using a pedestal sink we bought about ten years ago for this project, door will become a pocket door, heated floors, chosen the lights, the hardware. I just can’t decide on tile for the floor and walls. It’s really bumming me out. I have two small kiddos and this is our only bathroom so tile that has some texture is a must.

Just closed today on this house, built in 1933. It needs a little paint and maintenance but expensive things are already done, new boiler and replaced the asbestos tile roof already.

My old house’s front door has very large gaps around it. This room is also our bedroom. We are starting to freeze and the heat is running nonstop. Also got an energy audit and the temps from around the door are several degrees colder because of these gaps.
What are some ways you would seal around the door?

Edit to add: those are images of the door frame for reference not windows. Our windows are ok.

And before you suggest it, we rent so there’s a slim chance the door is getting replaced or major repairs unfortunately.
