When I was 15 I was riding my bike through town with my best friend, talking about my new girlfriend and how amazing she was. We rode up to this little old house with perfectly manicured rose bushes out front.
I told my friend, “I bet she’d love one of those.”
He replied, “Go ahead and take one. No one will notice or care.” That didn’t sit right with me, so I went up to the front door and knocked.
This little old woman in her late 80’s answered. I said, “Good morning ma’am, I noticed your beautiful roses, and I was wondering if it would be ok for me to take one for my girlfriend.”
She smiled, thanked me for the compliment, then said, “I’ll go grab my scissors.” She came back out and let me choose a beautiful one, snipped it, then handed it to me. I saw her glance over my shoulder, looking at my friend and our bicycles waiting on the sidewalk. Her smile faded, and she got a far-away look in her eyes. She looked at me earnestly and said, “Don’t ever stop riding that bicycle, young man.”
It’s crazy how a random moment can be life-changing. She’ll never know how much those words continue to ring in my mind, years later. How many times I’ve remembered them and pushed through adversity. I’m middle-aged now. Girlfriend is long gone. No, I don’t ride my bike through the neighborhood with my best friend anymore. But every time I wake up at 5 am and think, “Maybe I should just sleep in, I’m too sore to go snowboarding today.” I hear those words again:
“Don’t ever stop riding that bicycle, young man.”
I never got her name, couldn’t tell you exactly where the house was. But I always stop half-way down the first run of the day, look around with a smile, and silently thank her.
