The comments of Comedian Tony Hinchcliffe during the Republican rally at Madison Square Garden in New York defining them as a “joke”, were out of place. Puerto Rico means a Rich Port and is not a “floating island of garbage”. Obviously, his lack of knowledge of Puerto Rico contributes to that. Of course, the delay of the Republican Party's response reveals a lot of their internal feelings. Then came the comments from the White House regarding the followers of the other party, by referring to them as “garbage”, also.
Let’s help some with the significance of the contributions of Puerto Rico to the USA. The men and women of Puerto Rico have served in U.S. wars from the Revolutionary War and the Civil War on. Since becoming U.S. citizens in 1917, Puerto Ricans have served in disproportionate numbers relative to their population within the U.S.
How many Puerto Ricans have served in the U.S. military since 1917?
• WW I – 18,000
• WW II – 65,000
• Korean – 61,000
• Vietnam – 48,000
• Gulf – 10,000
• Enduring & Iraqi Freedom – 25,000
• National Guard in 2014 – 8,400+
• Veterans in PR – 100,000+
An estimated 5.8 million Hispanics of Puerto Rican origin lived in the United States in 2021, according to a Pew Research Center analysis of the U.S. Census Bureau’s American Community Survey. Puerto Ricans in this statistical profile are people who self-identify as Hispanics of Puerto Rican origin and live in the 50 U.S. states and the District of Columbia; this includes those who were born in Puerto Rico and those who trace their family ancestry to Puerto Rico.
And all of them have the right to exercise their rights to VOTE in the USA, if they are residents in the continental USA.
No elected official or candidate should use his authority or positioning to degrade attack, ridicule or make someone else feel inferior or less than any other person. Our community needs better than the actual rhetoric been use during these political campaigns and even during the White House press conferences. We adults should be the example of the next generation by showing kindness and respect toward one another. If we do not measure and change the way we are communicating and delivering these messages the question is, what is next, a civil war? All the decades of arduous work by our founding fathers, and everyone in between including our Puerto Rican community to build a democracy we all still enjoy today in the United States of America will be flush down the drain. We need to come together as one country without any private agendas to benefit the few. We need to protect our USA constitution and put people first.
