The Man in the Arena
Got some devastating news over the weekend. Giorgio “Gio” Kirylo, a Marine who deployed with Eddie Gallagher - Navy SEAL Chief to Iraq and was there when an !S!S fighter died after a battle with SEALs outside Mosul, later testifying that Chief Gallagher provided medical care to the enemy combatant, took his own life.
Gio was a hell of a guy. He was as loyal as the day is long, with a seemingly-never ending motor that never stopped making jokes. He was a critical witness and instrumental to Eddie proving his innocence against war crime charges. I know how much he loved Eddie and the other Team guys he spent so much time with during and after his service.
Just re-listening to his testimony during Eddie’s trial and re-reading the notes from many interviews with Gio while writing The Man in the Arena made me laugh out loud. The man knew how to tell a story, and wasn’t afraid of speaking his mind. He was so generous with his time, spending hours making sure I understood the scene in Mosul, and what really happened that day. He loved his dogs, his country, and his brothers. Sucks that he must have been hurting enough to do what he did.
Hope you’re in a better place now, Gio.
