File this one under: future camp ideas

When you think “summer camp” you likely think of swimming, sports, crafts, and campfire songs. What if the camp had all that, and conflict resolution? Well, then you’ve likely found yourself at one of CISV’s highly selective summer camps.

is open on Gay St. Inside you’ll find a mix of bookstore classics and new releases shelved between a smattering of blue wingback chairs. Downstairs are gifts and a kid’s section with the Richard Scary classic Cars and Trucks, Things That Go, and the entire Dog Man series.

Upstairs you’ll find an autobiography of Katie Ledecky called My Swimming Life and sections on parenting, nature, and health and fitness. There is also an area for romance and classics with a pretty collector’s edition of Anne of Green Gables and a table of Pennsylvania authors.

We chat Olympics with a couple who has been there seven times and go inside West Chester’s newest bookstore. 🌱📕💍

Happy Friday, everyone. You know what that means - new Roundup! 🚨🚨This week we dig into the latest round of Restaurant Inspection reports. It was a rough month for a couple of popular pizza places and Popeye’s struggles early out of the gate. (Sorry, too much Olympic viewing.) 🍕🍗

Plus, developers share new plans for the apartments at Burger King. I know they are trying to sell the differences but they seem pretty similar to me - and a celebration of you out there living your best life. 🎉👏

A very special thank you to this week’s Community Sponsor Uptown Knauer Performing Arts Center. If you haven’t been over to check out a show, you really need to go. We saw their performance of Percy Jackson’s The Lightning Thief last night and the kids loved it.

Remember, the Roundup is available by subscription only but it’s a very reasonable $12 - for the year. I spent more than that last night on concessions at the play. I’ll leave you a link if you’d like to learn more. 🥤🍫

The of West Chester maintains nearly 1000 street lights. It’s an impressive light infrastructure that helps brighten the way and keep residents feeling safe but a recent upgrade to new brighter LEDs came with an unintended consequence.

“We saw a noticeable decline in the number of fireflies when the new outdoor lighting was installed,” Senator Carolyn Comitta, who lives near Everhart Park, shared via email.

Sen. Comitta worked with the Borough to devise a plan to turn off one of the lights in the park and dim two of the street lights on Brandywine St. for the summer. The quick fix garnered visible, if not exactly scientifically verified (no official counts were done either before or after), results.

“Within six weeks, believe it or not, it looks like a light show,” said Ward 6 Borough Councilman Bernie Flynn.

You can read more about this project and get tips to bring back the fireflies to your yard in this week’s West Chester Roundup. Link in the bio, if you’re interested.

After years of touting the benefits of locally owned and patiently growing their membership numbers, followed by months of searching for the perfect location, the West Chester Cooperative shared some big news last week. They signed a lease. The Borough of West Chester is getting its grocery store! 🍎

The store will be located on Market Street where the Market Street Print Shop stands today. It will be a full neighborhood grocery store with a focus on supporting local farms, food producers, and prepared foods. 🥦

The most exciting part about the space is the location,” said Co-op President Judy Carrino. “It has always been our goal to open a space in the Borough.” 🫑

This little gem of insight is from my weekly newsletter. Also updates on the Chili Cookoff, Short-term rentals, and changes to School District administration. A yearly subscription gets you 50 or so weeks of fun West Chester updates and events. Visit the link in the bio to learn how to get connected.

After years of speculating, we finally have word of what's planned for the empty lot across from Borough Hall.

A new predicted development in the works in the Borough of West Chester. It’s a seven-story apartment complex planned for a collection of lots around 400 E. Gay St, or, as I like to think of it, the Christmas Tree lot.

New issue alert! 🚨 It seems for the last few weeks I have been rolling along in summer mode, well, this week I was officially jolted back.

First I learned about a major new apartment complex planned for Gay St. Then the West Chester Co-op announced they secured a storefront, Chilifest is coming back, and the Post Office burned down? You’ll have to check me on that last one, details are still emerging, but it was definitely on fire and it is definitely closed for an “undetermined” amount of time.

Man, even in the summer some weeks get crazy.

West Chester could soon have a French Restaurant for the first time since Gilmore’s closed its doors more than a decade ago. 👩‍🍳Planned for 29 E. Gay St., is described as an “Upscale Casual” French restaurant. This is another 3West Hospitality project, a group you may not know by name but you know by restaurant. They also manage Slow Hand, Square Bar, The Brickette Lounge, and Jitters. Jolene’s is expected to open sometime this year.

This little gem of insight is from my weekly newsletter. 💍Also updates on , the Happy Bakery, and an expanded Exxon station on High St. (Not sure anyone was asking for that one.) The newsletter is filled with fun West Chester updates and events and available by yearly subscription. Visit the subscription page to learn more.

In West Chester, if one is good, three is better. In the past, it’s been pizza, poke bowls, bubble tea, and now, it’s chicken. Two weeks ago, Popeyes brought their Louisiana recipe to Paoli Pike. Then last week, crews were busy constructing the exterior framing for the West Goshen Shopping Center’s new Chick-fil-A (➡️ to see progress over a week) - but that’s not all. Now we can add into the mix. Crisp Chik’n is a Philly-based Chick-fil-A alternative with a solid reputation for quality food at a reasonable price.
