Chapter 1:

Here's a sample from Chapter 1 of Amish Salt & Sweet to get a taste of what's inside:

As they walked, Susie fell into step with Jacob on the opposite side of the fence. “Denki,” Susie said. “For helping Daed.”

“It’s no trouble,” Jacob said. “I’m not due at the carpentry until this afternoon.”

Jacob was apprenticed three days a week to Abel Bontrager, one of the finest furniture makers in the community. It was an excellent opportunity, and Jacob was doing well. Though bragging was against the Ordnung, Jacob’s mamm often (and loudly) praised Gott for giving her son the opportunity to work in a field to which he was so well suited.

“Do you like the work?” Susie asked.

“Ja,” Jacob said. “Mr. Bontrager is letting me do my own commissions now. Small pieces, but...”

“But?”

“I’ll be able to support a family, I think. If Gott wills.”

Susie dared to glance up at Jacob. Were his cheeks pink? Probably from the sun.

“Gutt,” Susie said. She imagined Jacob and Mary walking together, holding hands, kissing even, her setting the plates on a table he had made with his own hands. His hands around her waist.

Susie’s stomach twisted.

“Umm...”

Susie forced a smile. “Gutt. You will make a gutt daed.” She couldn’t bear to say husband, knowing he would not and did not see her as his wife.

“Denki,” Jacob said, taking off his hat and waving it in front of his face. “Hot work, this is. I’m obliged for the cool drink.”

“It’s not female trouble,” Susie blurted out, and then kicked herself. “Annie’s just...”

Jacob laughed. “I know,” and reaching across the fence, he pulled at her bonnet string.

“Jacob!” Susie pushed his hand away.

The feel of his skin against hers sent tingles through her skin, but she ignored them as Jacob said, “I yield! Peace!”

“You’re ridiculous,” Susie said, now laughing too. At least some of the awkwardness eased. Jacob might never be hers in that way, but they were friends.

When they reached the tree, Annie had already laid out a blanket beneath the large, shady branches. Jacob put one hand on the topmost slat of the fence, testing it, and then in one motion, hopped over.

They walked side by side to the blanket and sat as they had done countless times before. Susie set out the glasses and the sandwiches. She and Annie poured tea and lemonade and the mix Annie insisted on for herself.

Susie handed the heart pills to her daed, who wrinkled his nose. “Your mamm is overreacting, you know that.”

“The doctor said you need to take these, and Judith Graber agrees.”

Seven years ago, Judith had become the first female Amish EMT in Susie’s district, and Mamm along with the other ladies in their district often double-checked prescriptions and medical advice with her. Best to take advice from one of their own.

“Hmmph.” Daed sighed, but he took the pills and swallowed them with a gulp of tea.

When they had finished eating and Annie had packed up the remains, Jacob said, “Thank you, Susie, Annie.” Did his gaze linger a touch longer on Susie than her sister? “Susie, will you be at tomorrow’s Sing?”

“Ja,” Susie said. “Will you?” Of course he would. That was a stupid question.

“Ja.” He finished the last of his lemonade and handed her the glass. His fingers brushed hers as she took it, and the stupid butterflies were fluttering again, from her stomach through her chest and over her skin.

“Gutt,” Jacob said, his storm-blue eyes lingering on hers.

Susie bit her lip. Jacob kept hold of the cup, almost as if he wanted to keep the contact between them as much as she did. “You’ll bring your whoopie pies, ja? Mary Trachtenberg says they use a different recipe in Indiana, and...”

Susie’s skin went cold. Jacob was still talking, but Susie couldn’t think. Bad enough he liked Mary, it was even worse he was using her whoopie pies to court with her.

“Susie?”

Susie shook her head. “Sorry. I was woolgathering.”

“I told her there weren’t any whoopie pies I loved better than yours.”

“Ah.” Susie forced a nod. “Ja, I’ll bake them.” She always did.

Susie pulled the glass away and jammed in in the bag with more force than she should have. Thankfully the glass was thick, thunking against the other six. Jacob held his hand out a moment longer, almost as if surprised. “We should be getting back home, Annie. Mamm has chores for us.”

“Aww, Susie! It’s hot in the house! And boring!”

Normally, Susie would be eager to stay, but she couldn’t stand another moment with Jacob now, knowing he was so oblivious to her feelings. Knowing he only saw her as a means to secure Mary’s attentions...
