What’s The #1 Diversity Issue in The Workplace

In most of my speeches and training sessions on inclusion, I pose this question: What do you think is the number one diversity issue in the workplace? The responses vary widely, and with each answer, I reply enthusiastically: "Not quite!" Finally, after we've explored all possibilities, I reveal the answer.

Catch my response from yesterday’s Keynote at Grow Cedar Valley's Opportunity Summit in Cedar Falls, Iowa. Take a listen to this brief clip—I'd love to hear your thoughts!

Honored to be Featured in Talent Development's Award-Winning Magazine!

I'm incredibly grateful to the Association for Talent Development (ATD) for inviting me to contribute to their October issue of TD Magazine. I was thrilled to learn that my article, Overcoming DEIB Resistance, was selected as the cover story!

In this piece, I share effective strategies we've successfully implemented with clients to maximize the strengths of DEIB while reducing the impact of cultural missteps. I’d love for you to check it out and share your feedback. If you have access to this month's edition, please give it a read and let me know your thoughts!

TD Jakes at Black Tech Week in Cincinnati

For several years I've heard about the power and value of "Black Tech Week" in Cincinnati. Yesterday, I was able to experience it firsthand. First, attending a professional conference with 3 of my 4 adult children was rewarding. Second, it was one of the most powerful events I've attended recently, because of the oxygen that comes from being in an environment with so many talented People of Color. You immediately recognize how uncommon this experience is in your life.

I was able to reconnect with my friend, Bishop T.D. Jakes, who delivered a powerful message stating that every business needs to see themselves as a tech business. He suggested that this is a prerequisite to doing business globally and growing beyond a 2 person operation, which is the size of 90% of Black-owned businesses in this country. I was thrilled to have been instrumental in working with Board Members of the Freedom Center many years ago to persuade Bishop Jakes to join the board. So we were fellow board members for some time in Cincinnati (He attended the meetings in person!).

The power of Black Tech Week is certainly the information and opportunities, but the most significant value comes from connecting with and being around the attendees!!! The positive energy is off the charts. Everywhere you look, you see people, who look like you. People just walk up to you and begin talking because they want to know who you are and what you do. The attendees are entrepreneurs, investors, business executives, creators, innovators, and brilliant. It is so different from your typical experience at major conferences, where you are in the minority. The experience of feeling seen, heard, listened to, sought out, combined with your cultural dialect and rhythm being familiar and valued, is a very special experience. Finally, networking, friendship-building, and deal-making are occurring organically. Attending this event gave me hope that no matter what happens socially or politically in this country, we can make it if we simply leverage our collective influence and power.

DEI is Getting a New Name...Check out this Washington Post Article...

In today's Washington Post, Taylor Telford and Julian Mark shed light on the evolving landscape of DEI initiatives in their article "DEI is Getting a New Name. Can It Dump the Political Baggage?" Grateful to have been quoted along with Johnny Taylor, CEO of SHRM, and other notable DEI thought leaders, discussing the complexities and challenges faced as these initiatives respond to political pressures.

This piece dives into the significant shifts and the impact of political dynamics on DEI efforts. It's an essential read for anyone keeping an eye on how these vital programs adapt and strive to maintain their core objectives amidst shifting societal winds.

Let’s engage in this important conversation and consider what these changes mean for the future of inclusivity. 🤔💬 hashtag hashtag hashtag

The Joy of Listening!

People often believe that consulting is basically about having the "Gift of Gab." My greatest joy doesn't come from talking; it comes from listening. Clients may hire you for what they think you know, but they retain you based on your ability to listen to their concerns and collaborate with them to develop meaningful solutions. As soon as people open their mouths, that's when extraordinary things can happen. I love what I do, so it never really feels like work!
