Saying this as a Marine during the failed Hearts and Minds campaign:
Patriotism doesn't end in July.
Independence Day events are awesome and time off work is a great bonus too. But in this Post-9/11 America, we as Veterans have an enduring obligation to continue educating, encouraging, and empowering social progress for domestic tranquility and a common defense. It is an ideology.
Ideologies can systematically topple one strategic line of effort while simultaneously emboldening another. The Hearts and Minds strategy was not flawed. It's ex*****on was. We fell on hubris. Our American ideals, perspectives, and worldview got us in over our heads and we tactically misread the situation. Sure, we focused on patriotism; but our nuanced and dramatic cultural differences caused more complexities than we could have forecasted.
What is easy to forecast is that we need to understand what causes things to happen, why people do what they do, why people feel how they feel. It was a proven fact over the last 23 years that if enough people find strength in what they believe and why they see value in their way of life, they are unbeatable.
