CRUSADERS ADVANCE!

The Wellington boys basketball team traveled to Mulvane to take on the Wildcats for the third time this season. Mulvane had previously beaten Wellington twice this season but it was the Crusaders that came out on top tonight 44-42! We will move on to play at Hugoton on Saturday at 5:00 pm for the Sub-State Championship and a ticket to Salina!

Cheer/Dance Appreciation Post!

The #1 Lady Crusaders (19-1) will host #16 Ulysses (4-16) next Tuesday, February 27 at 6pm for the first round of SubState. The winner will play either Buhler or Scott Community the following Friday in the SubState Championship.

During halftime of last night’s girls varsity game, Wellington Cheer put on a performance with a gaggle or Pre-K through 5th graders who participated in their two-day Little Dukes Cheer Clinic.

WHS Boys Basketball will travel next week for the first round of SubState play. Mulvane (14-6) will host the the 12-8 Crusaders next Wednesday, February 28 at 7pm. Should the Crusaders win, they would next play the winner of Hugoton (18-2) v. Augusta (6-14) in the SubState Championship.

- State Update 3 -

Folks, Aubrey Hunt is wrestling in the CHAMPIONSHIP BOUT tomorrow!!!

Aubrey won by 4-2 decision against her opponent moments ago, so she will wrestle again tomorrow in the championship! This will be a rematch for her against Winfield sophomore Abby Brenn, whom she has wrestled 3 times previously this season and with whom she has traded places as the top-ranked wrestler in their weight class in the coaches poll since pre-season. Aubrey accounts for Brenn’s sole loss this year when she pinned her in their first matchup at the Caney Valley tournament. Brenn has subsequently beat Aubrey at our home invitational by pin and in the Regional Championship by tech fall. I do believe it is Aubrey’s turn to win again!

You can do it, Aubrey! TAKE STATE!!

Championship Round 1 - Maddie lost by fall (3:52) to Harper Andrews of Eudora.
Consolation Round 1 - Maddie lost by fall (3:47) to Dannee Anderson of Independence and has been eliminated from the bracket.

Maddie is a freshman and will be back! This is a fantastic achievement to make it to State in her first year of high school, and we’re excited to see what she accomplishes in the years to come!

Championship Round 1 - Aubrey won by fall (2:10) against Plainville’s Caydance Carter.
Championship Quarterfinals - Aubrey won in overtime (SV1 4-2) against Baldwin City’s Elee Pitman.

Senior Aubrey Hunt, last year’s State Runner-Up in the 190 lb weight class, is guaranteed to medal! If Aubrey wins her first match today, she will be in the championship bout on Saturday, either against Kara Pope of Girard or Winfield’s Abby Brenn, who Aubrey most recently lost to in the Regional Championship. If Aubrey loses her first match today, she will wrestle again today to determine whether she will be in the match 3rd or for 5th place on Saturday. Let’s Go, Aubrey!!

- State Update -

All four boys in the tournament have been eliminated this morning, and so the boys’ wrestling season has officially concluded for the Crusaders. Congratulations to Talan, Cayson, Jamar, and Derrick for the impressive achievement of qualifying for State. Derrick and Talan, thank you for your senior leadership! Cayson and Jamar, we’ll see you next year!

The girls should be starting soon with Maddie Fullerton wrestling Harper Andrews of Eudora for her first bout and Aubrey Hunt wrestling Caydance Carter of Plainville.

With last night’s win against Wichita Collegiate, the Lady Crusaders are officially the AVCTL Division IV Champions for the third season in a row. In addition to Val Norwood breaking the school’s record for career assists, the team also had five players put up double-digit points!

Dang, VAL, back at it again breaking school records!!

Last night junior Val Norwood added 7 assists to her stats, bringing her career record to 289 and overtaking the old school record which has stood for nearly 20 years!! The previous record of 284 was set in 2005 by Lindsey Davis, who went on to play Division II basketball at Missouri Southern State University.

Congratulations, Val, this is quite an accomplishment!

The WHS Crimson Dancers attended IDC Wichita held in Newton yesterday and won their social media challenge for the FIFTH year in a row! This means they’ve earned some money for their charity of choice: Wellington Humane Society! Way to go, Wellington!

FOUR FOR FOURTH!!!! Holy Smokes, Folks! We’ve got FOUR STATE QUALIFIERS for boys wrestling out of the regional tournament held in Andale today!

Let’s all congratulate Talan Cantrell, Cayson Ramirez, Jamar Armstrong, and Derrick Lowe on their fourth place finishes in their classes at what is generally accepted as the hardest regional in the state!! Well done, men!!

And then congratulate Cabel, Jalik, Axl, Hank, and Evan for their efforts this season as it wrapped up today in Andale. All five are juniors or sophomores, and they will be back!

It’s a great day to be a Crusader!

State takes place next week February 22-24 in Salina, KS.

The varsity squad provided a fun end to the night in Clearwater with a big win over the Indians. The Crusaders ran away with the game after a 12-10 score in the 1st quarter. Early on, Clearwater’s #12 alone blocked enough shots that could have frustrated and derailed a less mentally-tough team, but the Crusaders plugged along and were patient with shots when they needed to be and quick on defense, and stole the show by halftime. Proud of this team’s attitude and energy last night!

Next week the Crusaders host Collegiate on Tuesday and Andale on Friday. Let’s Go, Big Red!!
