Vigilant Officer Captures South Carolina Jail Escapee

On Thursday, 10/17/2024 around 1:00 am, the Roanoke Rapids Police Department responded to the area of Clinton Street in reference to a suspicious vehicle. When Officer I. Nielsen located the suspicious vehicle, it appeared broken down. The driver was with the vehicle. During the interaction with the driver, Halifax 911 Central Communication notified Officer Nielsen that the vehicle had been reported stolen from South Carolina. When Officer Nielson attempted to detain the driver, he fled on foot but was captured shortly thereafter.

The suspect identified himself as Garmal Brown from Santee, South Carolina. The suspect did not have any identification on him. He was charged with Possession of a Stolen Vehicle and Resist, Delay, and Obstruct an Officer. He received a $5,000 bond and a court date of 10/18/2024 and was to be held until he could produce identifying identification.

On Tuesday, 10/22/2024, upon following up on the stolen vehicle with South Carolina authorities, it was learned that Garmal Brown was not the real name of the suspect. It was confirmed that the suspect was in fact, Anton Conway Bennett, (30), of Chesterfield County, South Carolina. Bennett is wanted by the Chesterfield County Sheriff’s Office, SC, for escaping from their detention center during the morning hours of Monday, 10/14/2024 along with three others. Bennett was in jail for a theft case in South Carolina. Along with Bennett, only one other individual has been captured since the escape. It is highly unlikely that the other escapees are in our area based on information learned from Chesterfield County, SC authorities. Bennett appears to have been headed to Chesterfield County, VA (Yes same name). He has family there and is also actually wanted by law enforcement in Virginia for several theft cases.

In light of the new information, Bennett was also charged with Identity Theft, and the original charges of Possession of a Stolen Vehicle and Resist, Delay, and Obstruct an Officer. He is being held in the Halifax County Detention Center under no bond awaiting extradition to South Carolina and Virginia.

It's a new day across the state, and the risk of storms is possible for some. Happy Sunday, North Carolina! Today marks the first day of September; looking at morning data we're seeing areas of fog and clouds across the state. That'll burn off and lead to partly to mostly sunny skies; highs will be warm in the 80s to low 90s for most areas. We will have a trough moving through the state, and this will spark scattered to numerous showers and thunderstorms, especially across Central and Western NC, this afternoon and evening. Some of these storms will produce heavy
rain and localized flooding, mainly in urban and poor drainage locations. In addition, a few storms may become strong to severe with damaging wind gusts as the main threat. I'll watch the radar this afternoon and evening and pass along a few updates that I see might be needed or useful.

Ken Byrd is a former Roanoke Rapids PD officer. His wife Jennifer is very sick. She is a former Roanoke Rapids Graded School District teacher.

Glen Teal, another former RRPD officer and Halifax County SO Deputy, is having a pork chop plate sale with Scott Hall to help offset some costs for the Byrd family.
