Only one more month to enjoy Azie on Main in Villanova.
After a 15-year run, the Asian fusion favorite will close Sept. 22. The restaurantโ€™s landlord - The Villanova Center - is converting the space to offices.

Meanwhile, Azie owner Win Hospitality has been busy this summer converting the old Margaret Kuoโ€™s in Wayne into Maison Lotus, a French/Vietnamese mashup. Win also owns and operates nearby Blue Elephant on North Wayne Ave., Mikaido Thai Pepper in Ardmore and Teikoku in Newtown Square, among others.

Summer 2024โ€™s hot potato in Easttown has been settled.

After the public weighed in for 2.5 hours, Easttown Supervisors Monday night voted unanimously to levy an .5% Earned Income Tax on working residents.

That will translate to $925/yr for a wage earner making $185K, which is Easttown residentsโ€™ average annual wage, according to a revenue study commissioned jointly by Tredyffrin and Easttown last year. The study estimates that the EIT will swell Easttownโ€™s coffers by $4.4M annually.

The primary driver: funding increasing costs for essential safety services, including police and fire. Thereโ€™s a new fire house under construction in Berwyn and a need to hire more first responders because fewer are volunteering. Many Easttown officials also believe police desperately need facility and equipment upgrades and could use a second traffic officer. By law, Easttown must balance its budget each year.

โ€œItโ€™s a good thing for the township going forward,โ€ says Michael Wacey, vice chair of Easttownโ€™s board of supes. โ€œIt was a step weโ€™ve needed to make - weโ€™ve discussed for the last three years - and weโ€™ve made it.โ€
But Wacey says he became a supervisor to try to bring a sense of community to a suburban township. โ€œI just hope this doesnโ€™t split the community,โ€ he says.

The fine print for Easttown residents:
๐Ÿ‘‰๐ŸผIf youโ€™re already paying a .5% EIT to the municipality where you work, you wonโ€™t pay twice - Easttown gets your money.
๐Ÿ‘‰๐ŸผIf you already pay a 1% EIT to your place of employment, youโ€™ll pay .5% to Easttown and .5% to the municipality where you work.
๐Ÿ‘‰๐ŸผIf you work in Philly, youโ€™ll still pay Phila. Wage Tax but wonโ€™t have to pay Easttownโ€™s EIT.
๐Ÿ‘‰๐ŸผSocial security checks, interest, dividends and other unearned income are exempt. So retired seniors shouldnโ€™t be affected.

What about Easttownโ€™s neighbors? Tredyffrin voted against an EIT last year but has a much broader commercial property tax base. Most Chesco townships impose an EIT - typically at 1%: Willistown. Charlestown, Phoenixville & East Whiteland, among them. In Delco, Radnor, Edgemont and Newtown donโ€™t have an EIT. Lower Merion doesnโ€™t either.

Lower Merion School District has put a big, fat PR nightmare behind it.

The school board last night voted unanimously to sell the embattled property to Natural Lands, the local conservation nonprofit that operates Oakwellโ€™s neighbor, beloved Stoneleigh public garden.

In the works for months, the deal saves the storied estate as it adds acreage to Stoneleigh.

A ferocious, multi-year grassroots campaign to preserve Oakwell from Lower Merion's bulldozers โ€“ omnipresent yard signs, multiple petitions, clever videos, impassioned editorials and speeches, property tours and โ€œFire Drill Fridayโ€ picketing โ€“ has paid off.

Naturally, a whole range of folks are doing cartwheels: environmentalists, climate-change activists, birders, historic preservationists, naturalists, backyard gardeners, Oakwellโ€™s neighbors and more.

The sale means Oakwellโ€™s ten acres (1835 County Line Rd.) and three acres of adjacent Acorn Cottage (1800 W. Montgomery Ave.) wonโ€™t be clear cut for playing fields for nearby Black Rock Middle School. More than 500 towering trees will stay standing and the wildlife they welcome wonโ€™t be displaced, the ecosystem and watershed wonโ€™t be disrupted, and its historic buildings and garden structures wonโ€™t be sacrificed.

Lower Merion acquired the two tracts by eminent domain in late 2018 for $12.9 million โ€“ the former owner had planned to sell to Villanova U. โ€“ and will unload them for roughly the same number.

"We are heartened by the district's genuine efforts to listen to us," says Deb Rollins, a leader of the Preserve Oakwell campaign. "A pivot like this had to be a tough move and fraught with challenges. We are delighted to have connected with so many resourceful students and community members. And we are relieved beyond words to know that this historic and natural resource will be stewarded with skill by Natural Lands."

Quoting Natural Lands' news release announcing the sale, the additional acreage "will create space for expansive new garden areas at Stoneleigh, providing a broader platform from which to showcase the beauty and benefits of an ecologically sustainable approach to gardening. Early 20th century landscape designs by the famed Olmsted Brothers span both properties, which would be connected again for the first time since the portion known as Oakwell was subdivided off in the 1930s.

The buildings on the property would be restored and adapted, creating exciting improvements to the guest experience at Stoneleigh. As Stoneleigh is now, the portion that Natural Lands seeks to acquire would be placed under conservation easement with the Lower Merion Conservancy. The nonprofit purchasing the subdivided portion intends to enter into a mutually agreeable conservation easement agreement with Lower Merion Conservancy."

Authentic French pastries and savories โ€“ MIA in Wayne after the departure of Aux Petits Delices โ€“ are back!

None other than the pastry chef at Le Bec Fin is the baker behind the Main Lineโ€™s second Delice et Chocolat, a sweet little bakery cafรฉ that just opened softly in downtown Wayne.
The first Delice has been an Ardmore favorite since its 2017 debut.

Drop in for to-die-for croissants (almond is a house specialty), pastries, cakes, macarons, brownies and baguettes and locally-roasted Valerio coffee.

We tried a perfectly chewy chocolate macaron and the peerless tiramisu. ๐™ค๐™ค๐™ ๐™ก๐™– ๐™ก๐™–

Housemade quiches, soups, sandwiches โ€“ including the popular Le BEC (bacon, egg and cheese baked into a croissant) โ€“ begin in late August.

Owner is Wayne resident Joseph Amrani, the friendly Frenchman you may remember from his stints as GM at Wayne Hotel's Paramour (now Rosalie) and at Le Mas Perrier in Eagle Village (now Autograph Brasserie).

โ€œIt was natural to open here,โ€ Amrani says. โ€œI know Wayne and I took care of Wayne people all those years. They hold you to high standards and if you deliver, theyโ€™re very loyal.โ€

Josephโ€™s brother Antoine is the artisan pastry chef/chocolatier now whipping up confections for both cafรฉs in Wayne's new climate-controlled โ€œlab kitchenโ€ in the basement.

Devon interior designer Becky Wein has turned the nondescript custom frame shop โ€“ which has been spiffed up since its move to larger space a few doors down โ€“ into a delightful cafe with pale pistachio and pink walls, elegant woodowork and tin ceiling.

Dine in at one of a handful of cafรฉ tables or gobble your goodies at a small bar in back.

HOW TO BE A HERO IN 10 MINUTES

If you โ€“ or your kids โ€“ are between 18 and 40, a quick stop in Berwyn this Thursday could save this local momโ€™s life.

A year and half after Julie Bucher, mother of Emme (Stoga โ€™19) and Adde (Stoga โ€™21), wife of John (Stoga โ€™88), and longtime PE teacher in Lower Merion, finished grueling treatments and surgery for ovarian cancer, she started feeling sick again.

This time Julie was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia (AML), likely caused by her chemo treatments. She has one more round of chemo for AML but desperately needs to find a donor for a bone marrow transplant.

Thatโ€™s why Julieโ€™s family and friends and the NMDP (National Marrow Donor Program) are hosting a Be The Match event at La Cabra Brewing this Thursday. A simple, 10-minute cheek swab will determine whether youโ€™re a DNA match for Julie โ€“ or for someone else.

โ€œEven if we donโ€™t find a match for me, I like the idea of passing it forward for someone else who needs a transplant,โ€ Julie says.

If youโ€™re too, er, mature to be a donor, she hopes youโ€™ll consider donating platelets or blood one day soon โ€“ she needs regular infusions and the shortages are acute.

โ€œI love this community; theyโ€™re so good about giving,โ€ says a resolutely upbeat Julie, adding that donating bone marrow is easier than it once was. Itโ€™s now a 1 to 2 hour procedure with minimal down time.

PLEASE SPREAD THE WORD: JULIE BUCHERโ€™S MATCH EVENT AT LA CABRA BREWING (UPSTAIRS) IS THURSDAY, AUGUST 8, 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

If you haven't heard... The most random of accidents has devastated the family of a recent Conestoga grad. Will Dusinberre, 22, Class of โ€™20 and a rising senior at Rider U., remains in the ICU after a tree fell on him near the Montana/Wyoming border on June 28.
Will was hiking with friends on his day off from his job as a kidsโ€™ wrangler at a dude ranch when a gust of wind snapped the trunk of a snag (dead) lodgepole pine. The tree fell 10 feet to the valley below, directly hitting Willโ€™s face while he was lying on his back reading a book. A few friends were injured but Will took the brunt of it. His forehead, skull and orbital bone were severely fractured and his nasal cavity was crushed. Amazingly, a nurse and a firefighter happened to be hiking nearby and heard cries for help โ€“ there was no cell service โ€“ and helped stabilize Will. Four rope rescue teams and first responders took more than three hours to hoist Will out of the valley. He was airlifted to a Montana hospital and a few days later, flown to a Level 1 Trauma Center in Denver where his parents, Brian and Louise, remain at his bedside. While the hearing loss in one ear may be permanent, doctors are hopeful that a series of neurological, plastic and dental surgeries will restore his eye function and his smile. The right side of his face remains paralyzed and Will endures brutal headaches 24/7 but โ€“ miraculously, his brain function and speech โ€“ and his wondrous singing voice โ€“ remain intact. He took his first steps on Monday.
Will faces a long, hard road. He's already had three surgeries - including a bifrontal craniotomy โ€“ with more to come. PLEASE CONSIDER DONATING TO THE GOFUNDME STARTED BY HIS EXTENDED FAMILY & FRIENDS TO DEFRAY THE DUSINBERRES' MEDICAL BILLS AND ASSOCIATED EXPENSES NOT COVERED BY INSURANCE. THEY ARE EXPECTED TO BE ASTRONOMICAL. https://www.gofundme.com/f/help-will-dusinberre-on-his-road-to-recovery

Great to talk shop with a guy who writes about restaurants even more than I do: the Phila. Inquirerโ€™s Michael Klein (). What a mensch! Turns out he comes from a restaurant family, too ๐Ÿ˜Š

Mike was the guest speaker at realtor Michelle Leonardโ€™s latest Tasty Talk luncheon and dished on his 31 years reporting on the Philly dining scene. Good stuff!

Love that Mikeโ€™s choice for event beneficiary was The Sunday Love Project, a nonprofit that shares food and builds community in Kensington. ๐Ÿ‘Š๐Ÿผ๐Ÿ‘Š๐Ÿผ๐Ÿ‘Š๐Ÿผ

Thanks so much for inviting me, Michelle, aka . Call me โ€ฆ LUCKY! I was one of 300 people who got smarter last night!

At the big spring fundraiser for Main Line School Night, three BRILLIANT Penn Med docs shared the latest on longevity: aging smarter, living longer, precision medicine and AI in dementia, Alzheimerโ€™s & cancer care and more. One of the docs was the esteemed Zeke Emanuel, who advises U.S. Presidents and helped craft Obamacare.
CBS3โ€™s health reporter Stephanie Stahl did an awesome job leading the Q-and-A!

I love serving on the board of a nonprofit that connects people and enriches lives on the Main Line. (Dovetails nicely with SAVVYโ€™s mission, I think ๐Ÿ˜€) Dr. Emanuel himself noted that MLSNโ€™s classes, trips and tours as great ways to extend our health spans. Yay!!!

I canโ€™t imagine life here without perusing MLSNโ€™s always-enticing course catalog in the mail, can you? Like the Dwvon Horse Show, Radnor Hunt and the Wayne Farmerโ€™s Market, Main Line School Night is unique to our area and a true local treasure!

PS Special thanks Penn Medicine CEO Kevin Mahoney for helping us showcase three of your biggest brains!

New SAVVY spotlights fighters & boundary-breakers: A bold new memoir, an inspirational film from a Main Line family, a new kind of library, a father scaling Kilimanjaro for his son. Dining, development and local biz updates, too!

A FAMILY AFFAIR & A GRAND OPENING! I was excited to check out Ember, the super luxe, amenity-rich apartment complex now leasing on Swedesford Rd in Berwyn. My brother, BIll Mangan (at right), and my nephew, Will (at left), of neighboring Willโ€™s + Billโ€™s Brewery supplied the partyโ€™s๐Ÿบ. Uni Park (to my left), owner of nearby Cuticle Corner, brought the sunshine๐ŸŒž. Our photo was taken in a gorgeous alfresco alcove at Ember.

Housing developments can be controversial for good reasons - Lord knows, weโ€™ve covered these hot potatoes in SAVVY for years - but hereโ€™s what isnโ€™t: the influx of fresh faces is often a lifeline to the Main Lineโ€™s small, family-owned businesses. McKenzie Brew House couldnโ€™t survive COVID so my brother and his son borrowed ๐Ÿ’ฐ to gut the place and turn it into Willโ€™s + Billโ€™s, which, thankfully, is thriving. Cuticle Corner struggled mightily during COVID, too. But both owners worked like heck and survived โ€ฆ and tell us they look forward to welcoming Ember folks to their businessesโ€ฆ

My journey to journalism began with a deep thirst for knowledge, abiding care for my community and a profound respect for the written word.
I reflected on all three as I heard these two accomplished authors speak last night at my friendly neighborhood indie bookstore, Main Point Books. Is there a book in me, I wondered? And would I write a memoir, a work of fiction or long-form journalistic non-fiction?

At left is Cynthia Newberry Martin who has embarked on a literary quest of her own: visiting at least one indie bookstore in all 50 states for joint readings/signings with one local author of her choosing. (Canโ€™t wait to dig into Cynthiaโ€™s latest novel, โ€œThe Art of Her Life.โ€ If you adore Matisse as I do, itโ€™s a must-read.)

At right is Bala Cynwyd memoirist/Penncrest English teacher Jim Zervanos whose poignant, funny and raw โ€œThat Time I Got Cancer: A Love Storyโ€ was featured in SAVVY. Canโ€™t wait to tell you about his newest autobiographical work, publishing this spring!

I left Main Point Books with my spirits soaring and my brain buzzing: Could I become a published book author someday post-SAVVY? Do I have something to add to the conversation about this life, this world?

One thing Iโ€™ve learned: NEVER say neverโ€ฆ
