Notice from Columbia County Emergency Management: County Emergency Management will be participating in the Wisconsin Statewide Tornado Drill tomorrow, April 11, at 1:45 P.M. and 6:45 P.M. We will activate all of the sirens as they would during a real tornado warning during both drills.

This will be a good time for your home, business, school, etc. to practice what you would do if your location would be in the path of a real tornado warning.

The alert tone on the sirens is a steady 3 minute tone. When you hear this tone outside of the monthly first Wednesday test (between noon and 12:30 P.M. on the first Wednesday of the month) you should Immediately tune into local media or an all-hazards “weather radio.” And, seek appropriate shelter immediately.

The siren system will never sound an “all-clear” signal. Sometimes the sirens will sound multiple times for an extended warning. The sirens are for outdoor warning only and shall not be relied upon for indoor warning. Make sure you have wireless alerts enabled on your cell phones. All homes, businesses and buildings in general should have an all-hazards “weather” radio to receive critical emergency warnings.

Correction: The original version of this article incorrectly listed the deadline for candidacy filing, which is 5 p.m. on Jan. 2.

Whatever political winds are blowing in the lead-up to April elections, there will be big changes as many board members have declared non-candidacy as they finish their terms.

Wisconsin DNR issues air quality alert:

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has issued a statewide air quality advisory due to wildfire smoke coming from Western Canada.

The advisory is in effect from noon on Friday, July 14 through noon on Sunday, July 16. The Air Quality Index is expected to range from the Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups (Orange) level to possible scattered areas reaching the Unhealthy (Red) level.

The smoke will reach northwest counties this afternoon and evening. The heaviest smoke impacts are expected in the southern half of the state, where smoke is expected to arrive early Saturday morning. It is advised to close all windows and doors during heavy smoke – especially overnight – to help prevent smoke from entering homes and buildings.

This event likely will not be as prolonged or as severe as the wildfire smoke event in late June. During this air quality advisory, the DNR recommends those in sensitive groups (people with heart or lung disease, older adults, children, those who are pregnant, and those who work outdoors) consider avoiding prolonged or heavy exertion, while everyone else limit prolonged or heavy exertion.

If the Air Quality Index reaches the red Unhealthy level, sensitive groups should consider moving events inside, and everyone else should consider avoiding heavy exertion. During the advisory, watch for symptoms like coughing and shortness of breath as a sign to take a break or move indoors.

Today, Chief Adam Rogge issued Administrative Assistant Sarah Roche a Life Saving Certificate and pin. The certificate and pin were in recognition of an incident that occurred on 05/25/23, where Administrative Assistant Sarah Roche located an individual with suicidal ideation’s, straddling the top railing of the S. Main St., bridge.

Administrative Assistant Roche took it upon herself to get that individual off the railing and safely to the ground until law-enforcement could arrive on scene and take over. Well done Sarah!

We would also like to thank the Columbia County Sheriff’s Department and Poynette/Dekorra EMS for their assistance in this incident.

PRESS RELEASE — ACTIVE FIRE

On May 24th, 2023 at around 2:04PM, the Columbia County Dispatch Center began receiving calls about the Columbia County Recycling Center being on fire. Deputies responded and found that several storage buildings were fully engulfed in flames. At this time, the main recycling center building has not been affected.

Many fire agencies from around the area have responded to assist fighting this large fire. This is still a very active fire scene. You can expect to see large amounts of firetruck traffic on Highway 16 between Wyocena and Portage.

The Columbia County Sheriff’s Office would ask that you avoid this area for the remainder of the day. Fire crews are expected to be battling this fire into the night. Additional traffic on the roadway can cause hazardous situations for firetrucks and personnel that are on scene.

Columbia County Emergency Management is at the scene and assisting all fire agencies with their needs.
