Outside Colby

Outside Colby Outside Colby was founded to increase political debate and discussion at Colby.

www.outsidecolby.com

Outside Colby is a non-partisan political publication dedicated to informing students about different opinions on controversial issues in the United States and around the world. As a magazine, we believe the best way to do that is through opinion pieces that represent different political viewpoints. We want Outside Colby to be a place where students can discuss issues from al

l ends of the political spectrum because we believe understanding different perspectives helps to better inform one’s own. We hope each issue will inspire students to respond to the articles they've read in the form of new articles in subsequent editions. With our country and world facing increasingly complex challenges, it has become essential that the public remain as active and informed as possible, so that we can make the changes necessary to make the world a better place.

Dear Outside Colby Readers, Writers, and Thinkers:

We feel that now, more than ever, is the most pertinent time to publish a Disorientation Guide. This special issue from Outside Colby gives a voice to alternative narratives. It is critical to write about everything that happens at Colby, both in the past, present, and plans for the future.

At Outside Colby, we have always strove to be a platform that promotes dialogue on all things political. Now, as part of the Outside Colby community, we look to you to strengthen and broaden this platform right at the beginning of the year.

We have extended our deadline for submissions to Sunday, August 16th. Articles can be as short as 500 words! Submit your stories via email to Himanshu Bhurtel
([email protected]) and Eana Bacchiocchi ([email protected]).

08/07/2020

This message is a friendly reminder than articles for the Disorientation Guide are due on Sunday, August 9th!

You don't have to limit your articles to the guidelines we provided. This special issue is really about pushing the limits of content and providing a platform for alternative narratives from all parts of Colby.

Submit your articles via email to [email protected] and [email protected]. Please let us know if you have questions or comments!

Read on,

Hi all,

Outside Colby will once again be publishing a Disorientation Guide at the beginning of this semester. This special issue aims to publish pieces that are bluntly honest and unapologetic about aspects of the Colby experience that are misrepresented and overlooked in the traditional Orientation experience. As you reflect on your past Colby experiences, what do you wish you knew as a first-year? What stories cannot be forgotten from the past, that you feel incoming students need to know?

Our Disorientation Guide seeks to continue these sombre, informative, humorous or straightforward conversations and share these experiences, as students themselves cycle in and out of Colby.

Some examples of submissions in our previous guide:
- A history of activism on Colby’s campus
- Experience of being a certain identity at Colby and resources you’ve found to be useful
- A list of “secret heroes” across campus

Submissions are welcome from anyone and everyone! You do not need to be part of the Outside Colby staff to submit a piece. If interested, please email submissions to [email protected] and [email protected] by August 9th.

This is an epidemic, and it’s disproportionately affecting areas that have a high proportion of people of color, putting them at a distinct disadvantage from the get go."

"I was in Walmart when I saw a man in front of me openly carrying a gun. It was just there, strapped to his waist as he bent over to grab cereal, and I froze. I did not feel safer knowing he had it. It was quite the opposite, I felt terrified."

Every week for the last two months, I’ve had at least one nightmare in which I am a victim of a mass shooting.  I was walking in a parking lot last month when I heard an old car’s engine backfire multiple times, and in that moment, I believed I might die.  I was in Walmart when I

"It goes without saying that Warren and Sanders have both proposed smart and progressive futures for the country, and the popularity of both campaigns is exciting. But it is still worthwhile to pause and ask questions about who supports these candidates, and what that support means."
