Very hazardous travel conditions within the heart of the lake effect band off Lake Ontario this morning. Snow rapidly accumulating on area roadways including I-81, with sharp decreases in visibility. Exercise caution if the lake effect band lies between you and your destination!

A Lake Effect Snow Warning has been issued for areas east of the lakes for Wednesday through Sunday. Storm totals of 1-2 feet off Lake Erie and 2-3 feet off Lake Ontario. It will be windy with blowing snow at times. Snow bands will be localized, producing very poor travel conditions in the warned areas.

SUNDAY AFTERNOON...

* WHAT... Heavy lake effect snow possible. Total snowfall accumulations of Greater than 7 inches possible. Greatest snowfall accumulations will be found across the Tug Hill and southeast of Lake Ontario.

* WHERE... Wayne, Northern Cayuga, Oswego, Jefferson, and Lewis counties.

* WHEN...From Wednesday afternoon through Sunday afternoon.

* IMPACTS... Travel could be difficult. The hazardous conditions could impact the Wednesday evening and Thursday morning commutes.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

Narrow bands of heavy snow could bring rapidly changing road conditions and visibilities. Localized travel problems will be possible.

Watertown is getting the worst of the Lake Effect right now. If I-81 is like this, imagine how to the rest of the streets are doing in town. Be safe and if you don't have to, don't venture out.

Locally heavy lake effect snow will develop east of Lake Erie and Lake Ontario tonight and continue through Friday morning. Multiple feet of snow are possible in the most persistent snow bands. Strong winds will produce significant blowing and drifting snow, with near whiteout conditions at times. There will be MAJOR impacts to travel and society during this time.

A fast-moving storm system will bring a round of snow, lake effect snow, gusty winds, and blowing snow to the area this afternoon through Thursday night, with the worst conditions and greatest impacts (primarily from blowing snow) expected from late this evening through Thursday. Lake effect snow will then continue southeast/east of the lakes through Friday night.

SCHOOL TWO-HOUR DELAYS FOR MONDAY:
• Watertown City School District will be operating on a 2-hour delay, Monday, December 2, 2024. Our district crews have been working tirelessly all day to clear our schools for opening, but there is still significant work to be done. At this time, we will delay the opening of all schools tomorrow by two hours. Please note, this plan is subject to change based on weather conditions and overnight progress. If a closure becomes necessary, we will notify you as soon as possible.
• South Jefferson Central School District will be operating on a 2-hour delay, Monday, December 2, 2024. We will continue to assess the weather and general conditions of our facilities and community throughout the night and early tomorrow morning to determine if school will open, but at this time please be aware that Monday will begin with a 2-hour delay. There will be no AM BOCES and no AM PreK.
• Copenhagen Central School District will be operating on a 2-hour delay, Monday, December 2, 2024. This includes no AM BOCES and no Wee-Knights.
• Belleville-Henderson Central School District will be operating on a 2-hour delay, Monday, December 2, 2024.
• General Brown Central School District will be operating on a 2-hour delay, Monday, December 2, 2024. Due to ongoing storm cleanup efforts, we’re implementing a two-hour delay for all schools, December 2nd. This gives our crews extra time to ensure roads and pathways are safe for our students and staff. We’ll see you all a bit later in the morning, and please stay safe. There will be no AM BOCES and No AM Pre-K. Thank you!
• Indian River Central School District will be operating on a 2-hour delay, Monday, December 2, 2024.
• Sackets Harbor Central School District will be operating on a 2-hour delay, Monday, December 2, 2024.
• Carthage Central School District will be operating on a 2-hour delay, Monday, December 2, 2024. CCSD will be delayed by two hours on Monday to allow extra time for snow clearing and road preparation. There will be no morning Pre-K or AM BOCES. Stay safe!
• Bohlen Technical Center No AM BOCES, Monday, December 2, 2024.

Lake effect snow will continue off the lakes today, with little movement in the snow bands through 4 p.m. this afternoon. This will result in dangerous travel conditions, especially off Lake Ontario in the Watertown area where snowfall rates will be 2-3 inches per hour.
