New tom heads on the kit for tomorrow's drum tracking session with 68 AD.

02/03/2024

Been quite a while since there's been a post here. My apologies for that. Things are only just now coming back online for LCBW, as we all know what happened due to COVID. But there is forward movement.

The landlord has slowly been updating things in the building, and this past week was finally LCBW's turn. The live room was given a bit of a makeover, with a new outer wall put in place with far better insulation, a new floor and eventually a new window [they're on backorder]. The control room will get a similar treatment soon, perhaps as early as next week.

Work began 2 weeks ago on the upcoming album from DUAL DIAGNOSIS, and that's progressing well. Next Sunday [11 Feb] will see the return of 68 AD for their 6th album. Drum tracking is set to begin that day, with a 2nd session a few weeks later.

The new album from BLOOD FEAST Legions Worldwide was completed at the end of 2023. Some additional mixing was done with the help of Mike Sabatini at Bandmother Recording in Jersey City, and it was mastered by Alan Douches at West West Side Music. Hoping for a May release via Hells Headbangers Records.

Cheers,
CJ

What is this that stands before me...

Welcome to the brand-new cassette transfer centre for LCBW Recording. And by "brand-new" I really mean old-school – an iMac G4 from 2001; a TASCAM 112 Mk. II cassette deck from the '90s [and re-furbed last Summer]; a pair of Radio Shack Realistic shelf speakers from the mid '90s; and a Technics stereo receiver that I purchased from Sears back in 1982. And I'll be running Sound Studio v3.5.7 software from 2008.

I just finished setting this up at home. Perfect to use during these seemingly endless hours during the stay-at-home edict. Gonna start transferring some bootlegs first – most notably Exodus from L'Amour on 25 August 1985 [the infamous show when Paul Baloff was too sick/drunk to perform], and a Krokus show from Long Island in 1982.

While there haven't been any sessions going on at the studio due the the stay-at-home edict, at least I've been able to do some maintenance. Spent yesterday and today doing some overdue re-wiring of the control room rack. Everything is nice and tidy now, and the patch bays [only one pictured now] will keep me from having to change things in the back. Also did some re-arranging in the CR – a little more space, and a lot less clutter.

Tomorrow I'll run the new snake from the live room into the CR.

Just finished mastering the new album from SACRIFICIAL BLOOD, awaiting approval.🙂

03/12/2020

Off to the studio in 10-15 minutes. Busy day ahead. On the agenda are the following:

• finish mastering the new album from SACRIFICIAL BLOOD.

• a short bass tracking session with MIKE LePOND.

• rehearsal with BLOOD FEAST.

And tomorrow I will finish mixing the DEATH METALLIC demo.

Out now on AFM Records. Mostly engineered by me here at LCBW.

Busy weekend. 68 AD was in yesterday for lead guitar and vocal tracking. Finishing their rough mixes right now ("Such A Fool" is up next). Had DUAL DIAGNOSIS in to touch up some mixes this morning. Mastering those tomorrow.

Also finished the mixes for the new SACRIFICIAL BLOOD album this past Thursday. Mastering to follow tomorrow as well.

Blood Feast rehearsal in 90 minutes. But first we'll be removing the couch from the live room. It's time to let it go. No matter where it's placed it's in the way. Just too much stuff here and need the space.

03/03/2020

Just finished some mixing for the new SACRIFICIAL BLOOD album. 9 songs in all – 5 are finished and were 2 just submitted for approval. The remaining 2 will get tackled tomorrow, along with any tweeks to today's songs.

Up in a few minutes is another bass tracking session for BLOOD FEAST.

In the studio yesterday with Ross The Boss. We're using his Engl Powerball 2, my EVH 5150 III 50w and his Eleven rack, along with an assortment of his iconic guitars. These tracks sound massive!!

So I've been given the 'all clear' to talk aboot one my current clients. This past weekend saw the start of tracking for the 4th album from ROSS THE BOSS. Drummer Steve Bolognese flew in from California to track his drums. He cut 13 songs in 3 days... super impressive!! Especially since the band had no rehearsals in the lead up. All mental homework for Steve. He's a true professional, and a monster player!!

Ross was there nearly the entire time, as was bassist Mike LePond. RTB was our chef, grilling burgers, sausage, pork chops and steak on his George Forman grill. Lots of laughs were had while laying down the metal.

Next up are Ross's guitar tracks. We begin those on Friday. Also, fingers crossed that I'll get another long session with 68 AD on Sunday.

09/21/2019

Last Sunday's session 68 AD went extremely well. Bass and keyboards are now done, and we've begun the lead vocals. Still a lot of vocals to go, as well as guitar.

Today begins another album project. Nothing but drums the next 3 days. Cheers to my amazing friend Michael Sabatini of Bandmother Recording [and the mighty Attacker] for helping out with the drum set-up and tuning yesterday.

More soon...

Doing a little guitar and bass tracking today, and testing out some new gear at the same time. Lots going on throughout the rest of the year. And I'm gonna be a lot better at posting updates.👍👍👍

On Sunday 68AD will be in. Still a lot to do on their 4th album but we're ready to hunker down and see it to the finish line.

BLOOD FEAST drum tracking is going great. Adam Kieffer kicked out 2 more songs last night. Back at it tonight, and throughout the weekend.

Glad to have this old friend back in service. And just in time for the sessions for the new album from BLOOD FEAST.

Been mixing the new BLOOD FEAST EP all weekend. 5 songs down, one to go. It's all sounding rather brutal, he he he...

06/10/2018

Spent today working at LCBW West. Updated rough mixes for 68 AD, then worked on dialing in the drum sounds for the new EP from BLOOD FEAST. Also imported the drums for the bonus live track that'll be included there.

05/20/2018

The drums for the 4th album from 68 AD have been tracked. 17 songs in all, which includes 3 covers. Jose Cruz did a great job over the course of his 2 sessions. We will probably start tracking bass next, but in a few weeks when I return from California.

2 sessions are coming up on Wednesday night – one with MIKE LePOND and the other with BLOOD FEAST.

05/20/2018

I finally got the 'hot spot' on my tablet to work, so LCBW once again has internet. Of course, I have to remember to bring said tablet. :P

Yesterday's drum tracking session for 68 AD went very well. Jose recorded 10 of the album's 12 songs (they may add a few covers as well). Even for a rock band that's a lot of drumming, and we knew there would be a 2nd drum session anyway. 8 of these are definitely keepers, maybe 9. The 10th song will definitely be re-tracked at his next session.

Jose brought his drums rather than use the house kit (although we wound up swapping his floor tom for our Pearl 16"), and we dialed in some great tones. Very befitting the 'wall of sound' that is 68 AD.

As usual, Art did the scratch guitar and vocal tracks. Some of the guitars may stay, but the vocals will be re-done.

The next potential drum session is May 20th. Hoping to get to some of the guitars before that.

This weekend should see the final tracking session for the new EP from BLOOD FEAST.

04/29/2018

Starting the 4th album from 68 AD today. Art and Jose are cutting the first song right now.

04/08/2018

Great session yesterday for the new BLOOD FEAST EP. Only one bass track, 3 lead vocals and one lead guitar (which is a guest spot – still not sure if it will be recorded in house) left to do. It's sounding massive. :)

04/07/2018

Things perk up a bit tomorrow as BLOOD FEAST is in to finish up tracking their new EP. Well, at least that's the plan. :P

01/02/2018

So... the first session of 2018 didn't go as planned. Adam Tranquilli and I reconvened as scheduled at 11:00am, all set to finish off the rhythm guitars for the new BLOOD FEAST EP. We left everything set up as it was – all we had to do was turn everything on, cheque the tuning and get started. The only problem was that the guitar sound had changed overnight. Why?? Because we turned off the heat in the live room (we did leave it on in the CR, thankfully). Overnight the temperature dropped to single digits in Watchung (it was -5F by my house). So we cranked up the heated and waited it out.

Damn you Mother Nature. :(

By 4:00pm it was warm enough, and the killer guitar sound that we had on Sunday magically re-appeared. We finally began tracking the final 3 songs and everything went great. Next up we'll do all the 'colouring in' and start the lead guitars. Tom Lorenzo should be set to start his bass tracks very soon, also.

01/01/2018

Final post for 2017...

3 great sessions today.

First up was DUAL DIAGNOSIS, working on performance mixes. 4 of their 5 songs are all set, and we're looking at next weekend to finish up. We may even get started on some of their next batch of material.

Session #2 was with guitarists Mike Benetatos and Jon Hasselbrink of ATTACKER. Both were invited to contribute their lead guitar skills to a song from friends in Spain. And what a shred-fest it was, lots of fun!! :)

Lastly was rhythm guitar tracking for the new BLOOD FEAST EP. My bandmate Adam Tranquilli and I dialed in a ridiculously heavy tone, and then we were off to the races. 2 songs worth of rhythms are now done. We'll be back at it tomorrow at 11:00am to finish off the rest.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!

12/11/2017

So the long weekend of tracking the new EP for BLOOD FEAST is over. On Friday night we set up the drum kit and mic'd it up. Saturday we got sounds and started tracking. New drummer Adam Kieffer killed it, cutting all 5 songs. We left everything set up and re-convened this morning to listen with fresh ears, and all was good. We broke down the kit and dug into some rhythm geetars. Adam Tranquilli (who will be tracking all the rhythms) cut 2 tracks for each song on his rig. At the next session (on Sunday the 17th) he'll do the same thing, but with my amp. After that Tom Lorenzo will tackle the bass tracks, probably during the week between Xmas and New Year's.

Now I'm at my home studio, backing up the files.
