When Angela Zeng raced down the second hill on the Hershey Parkview Cross Country Course Saturday morning in the Class 3A girls race at the PIAA Championships, the leaders started to pull away, but the South Fayette sophomore didn’t let that deter her from finishing strong.

Zeng focused on her form and pushed through to finish sixth out of 238 competitors. Zeng crossed the finish line in 18:49.

Will Smith homered in the 11th inning after Miguel Rojas connected for a tying drive in the ninth, and the Los Angeles Dodgers beat the Toronto Blue Jays 5-4 in Game 7 Saturday night to become the first team in a quarter century to win consecutive World Series titles.

Los Angeles overcame 3-0 and 4-2 deficits and escaped a bases-loaded jam in the ninth to become the first repeat champion since the 1998-2000 New York Yankees, and the first from the National League since the 1975 and ’76 Cincinnati Reds.

The problem with fairy tale endings is that sometimes they don’t work out the way we want.

Take Saturday night as an example.

We find a Peters Township team looking for its first WPIAL volleyball title against a very good Pine-Richland team that has four championship trophies sitting in the trophy case at school.

Ohio State’s defense received plenty of attention entering Saturday’s game against Penn State, especially with former defensive coordinator Jim Knowles coming back to Ohio Stadium.

However, it was the Buckeyes’ increasingly high-powered offense that made sure Knowles’ return wasn’t hospitable.

Julian Sayin passed for 316 yards and four touchdowns, Jeremiah Smith scored twice and the top-ranked Buckeyes pulled away in the second half for a 38-14 victory over the Nittany Lions.

Trey Yesavage set a World Series rookie record with 12 strikeouts, and the Toronto Blue Jays opened Game 5 with back-to-back homers in a 6-1 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers on Wednesday that moved them within one win of their first championship since 1993.

Davis Schneider and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. connected on Blake Snell’s first and third pitches, the first consecutive homers to start a Series game.

Yesavage, a precocious 22-year-old right-hander who began his season last April pitching before 327 fans in Class A, took over from there.

Top-ranked Ohio State is rested twice over and preparing to finish the regular season with a five-game stretch that culminates at Michigan.

The Buckeyes’ open weekends (Sept. 20 and Oct. 25) essentially broke the season into thirds for coach Ryan Day and his staff.

They focused extensive energy on the season-opening visit from Texas, faced Grambling State and Ohio, and then got a break. After facing Washington, Minnesota, Illinois and Wisconsin, Ohio State (7-0, 4-0 Big Ten) got another day off last weekend.

Fox Chapel had only one chance to score in each of the two overtimes, but Lily McLaughlin made it count.

McLaughlin got a pass from Emily McKee into open space in the 18-yard box and put a shot in just underneath the crossbar with 1:38 remaining in double overtime to deny South Fayette an opportunity for a district 3-peat.

McLaughlin’s late tally propelled Fox Chapel to a 1-0 victory, the WPIAL Class 3A championship and some revenge.

When Zeng crossed the finish line to win the WPIAL Class 3A girls cross country meet last Wednesday at White Oak Park she felt like she still had some more left in the tank.

That might be tough news for her future competitors to hear, because she won by 32 seconds, stopping the clock at 17:43.70.

Jordan Love spent three years absorbing what he could from Aaron Rodgers. Footwork. Cadence. Throwing motion. Film study. The list of things Love gleaned from his mentor goes on and on, every last item invaluable in Love’s development.

And seemingly every last one of them was on display Sunday night, when the Green Bay quarterback of the present and future outdueled the Green Bay quarterback of the past and served notice he’s ready to start writing a legend of his own.

Prior to the start of the Breeders Crown eliminations, it was expected that Ron Burke would be the winning trainer of the champion 3-year-old c**t pacer Saturday night at Woodbine Mohawk Park, Ontario.

And he was.

Except the champion isn’t Louprint – it’s stablemate Sippinonsearoc, who poured it on in the stretch to capture the $600,000 final in a stakes-record 1:47.3.
