Caleb Williams hoped he’d get a chance to chat with Aaron Rodgers. He got his opportunity after he led the Bears to yet another close win.

Williams threw for three touchdowns, and Chicago beat the Pittsburgh Steelers 31-28 in a matchup of division leaders on Sunday while Rodgers, the Bears’ old nemesis, was sidelined with a broken left wrist.

“Right after the game, we ended up saying hello, get healthy and we’ll go from there,” Williams said.

Amarri Monroe scored 25 points to lead Quinnipiac to an 83-75 victory over Pitt on Sunday in the Legends Classic, giving the Bobcats their first win over an Atlantic Coast Conference member.

Monroe buried his final six shots and finished 9 for 13 with four 3-pointers for the Bobcats (4-2), who entered 0-4 all time against the ACC. He made 3 of 4 free throws and added four steals.

Quarterback Roman Purcell had two touchdown runs in the first quarter, Kendrick Agenor ran for 122 yards and one score and California defeated Virginia Union 27-24 in the first round of the NCAA Division II football playoffs on Saturday.

California (9-3) is the sixth seed in Super Region One and Virginia Union (9-3) was the No. 3 seed. Cal will play seventh-seeded Frostburg State in the second round. Frostburg State upset No. 2 seed Johnson C. Smith, 21-7.

Ja’Kyrian Turner ran for 201 yards and a touchdown, Braylan Lovelace had a 100-yard interception return and Pittsburgh held off No. 15 Georgia Tech 42-28 on Saturday night to keep its Atlantic Coast Conference championship hopes alive.

“Incredible job by our guys going on the road against a really good football team,” Pitt coach Pat Narduzzi said. “It’s not easy on the road anywhere in the ACC, and to come out and do that was great.”

Up 28-0 early in the second quarter, Pitt (8-3, 6-1) had only a seven-point advantage in the fourth quarter when Turner went up the middle for 56 yards and a touchdown with 2:41 remaining.

Freshman Kayden Mingo scored a career-high 24 points, and Penn State held off Harvard for an 84-80 victory on Wednesday night.

Harvard’s Chandler Pigge made three free throws to tie it 70-all with 4:56 remaining. Penn State’s Melih Tunca scored the next four points, and the Nittany Lions later stretched their lead to 82-76 with 24 seconds to play. Pigge converted a four-point play to cut the deficit to 82-80 before Freddie Dilione V sealed it from the free-throw line.

Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin scored a little over two minutes apart in the first period to help the Pittsburgh Penguins beat the Nashville Predators 4-0 on Sunday to split their NHL’s Global Series in Sweden’s capital.

The Penguins bounced back from a 2-1 loss to the Predators in the opener of the two-game series on Friday and snapped a three-game skid. Rookie goaltender Sergei Murashov stopped 21 shots for his first victory in his second NHL start.

Pitt coach Pat Narduzzi raised eyebrows this week when he declined to describe the 23rd-ranked Panthers’ showdown against No. 9 Notre Dame as a “must-win.”

Technically, Narduzzi was right. Pitt’s only path to the College Football Playoff is by winning the ACC championship.

Notre Dame has no such wiggle room. And the Fighting Irish played like it.

Ethan Grunkemeyer threw two touchdown passes to Devonte Ross, Kaytron Allen ran for a career-high 181 yards and two touchdowns and Penn State defeated Michigan State 28-10 on Saturday to snap a six-game losing streak.

Grunkemeyer completed 8 of 13 passes for 127 yards for the Nittany Lions (4-6 overall, 1-6 Big Ten).

Grunkemeyer sealed the win with a 4-yard touchdown pass to Ross with 4:32 left and Allen added his second touchdown on a 26-yard run with 2:07 remaining.

West Virginia’s quest for a bowl game came to an end Saturday afternoon.

The Mountaineers fell to Arizona State 25-23 to lose their seventh game of the season, knocking WVU out of bowl game contention. The Mountaineers fell to 4-7 on the year, 2-6 in the Big 12. Arizona State moved up to 7-3, with a chance to make the Big 12 title game.

WVU has a bye and then closes out the season against Texas Tech, which is ranked in the top 10, and could be even higher in two weeks.
