Along with advanced placement classes and college courses, many take part in extracurricular activities, volunteer, or have part-time jobs.

But since they’re excelling academically, many think there’s no cause for worry. Oftentimes, that’s not the case, said Dr. Mary Jo Podgurski, founder of the UPMC Washington Teen Outreach, a program that trains peer educators and mentors young parents.

“I think sometimes high achievers get lost,” she said.

That’s something 17-year-old Haylie Goforth has seen at South Fayette High School.

Timothy Ringer was at a crossroads.

The Waynesburg resident had spent 19 years of his life incarcerated. In 2024, he was facing prosecution after a new charge of attempting to evade arrest.

“My cousin was killed a few years ago, and it sent me back down the spiral,” the 39-year-old said. “Seeing my family hurt, I didn’t want them to see that again from me, because we were walking down the same path. So I decided a change was necessary.”

Members of Washington County’s Daughters of the American Revolution believe in remembering the past by looking to the present.

The nonprofit organization, a branch of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution, is made up of women whose ancestors were patriots in the country’s fight for independence.

“These brave men, women and children, against all odds, defeated the greatest military might in the world during the American Revolution. There was no Navy or Army. There was no infrastructure. Because of them, we were able to establish democracy,” said Cate Briggs, regent for the Washington County DAR Chapter.

Peters Township council almost did not approve next year’s budget as elected officials were divided on a hike in taxes.

Initially, an ordinance raising property taxes in Peters from 1.7 mills to 1.95 mills failed in a 3-3 vote. Gary Stiegel Jr., Frank Kosir Jr., and Frank Arcuri voted against the increase. Council member Matt Rost was absent.

At that point, Township Manager Paul Lauer advised council to not adopt the budget, as the spending plan was predicated on the tax increase.
