Gus Pagonis grew up in Charleroi three-quarters of a century ago, amid smokestacks and among countless Mon Valley kids who likewise were uncertain of their lifetime trajectories.

“I was in a rock ‘n roll band in the Valley when I was younger,” Pagonis recounted. “I think I was 15 or 16. My dad would say, ‘Do you want to be a bum all of your life or go to school?’

The near triple-digit temperatures have sent many people scrambling indoors to enjoy the comforts of AC.

But even in broiling heat, there are still culverts that have to be replaced, water leaks that need to be repaired, or customers who desperately want a lemonade.

“We provide a service that has to be done regardless of the weather,” said Dave Faddis, an operations supervisor for Southwestern Pennsylvania Water Authority. “We’re out here when it’s -5 or we’re out here when it’s 100.”

Everything’s coming up roses for Carolyn and Ron Beinlich, owners of Triple B Farms. Or should that be “strawberries?”

For the past 40 years, the couple have operated the popular farm that has been a destination for area families, Scout troops and other organizations for its pick-your-own fruits and vegetables, children’s activities, farm animals and fall pumpkin festival. With a mailing address of at 823 Berry Lane, Monongahela, the farm actually rests in Allegheny County.

“It went fast; it really did,” Carolyn Beinlich said of being in business for four decades. “We have said the only reason we made it is that we were too hard-headed to quit. Quite honestly, when I look back I don’t know how we did it.”

Growing up in Avella, Joey Gonzalez heard plenty of stories about Shades of Death Road.

It’s a place where people were murdered and hanged. Sometimes when people drove along the Jefferson Township roadway, their cars would inexplicably shut off.

“Personally, I haven’t experienced anything paranormal. When I was younger, I would go walk the road at night or drive,” said Gonzalez, 38.

Work is underway in Strabane Square to bring a Marshalls department store to the shopping center.

Crews could be seen at 347 Washington Road, the former site of Dick’s Sporting Goods, this week as a “coming soon” sign for Marshalls went in the window.

Kristin Hullihen, South Strabane Township’s director of planning and zoning, said Marshalls recently acquired a building permit to conduct interior renovations at the building. Hullihen could not say when the store might be opening.

Washington County is using its remaining federal COVID relief money to remove dozens of blighted properties, whether it’s a sprawling dilapidated mall that needs to be cleared for redevelopment or a small home that has fallen into despair and is creating safety concerns in a neighborhood.

Last summer, the county commissioners set up a Blight Mitigation and Demolition fund with the help of $13 million in federal American Rescue Plan Act money that had to be earmarked by the end of 2024.
