In 2019, the North Carolina Department of Natural and Cultural Resources honored Aurora native, Dr. John Cordice, with saving Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s life. At the time, credit for feat was given to Dr. Aubré de Lambert Maynard; however, it was later realized that Cordice and Dr. Emil Naclerio, an Italian-American, ensured King's survival.
